Controlling Snails and Slugs

Article Image Alt Text

Many gardeners consider snails and slugs to be the most disgusting pests in the garden. I could live with their looks if they just didn’t cause so much damage.

Snails and slugs belong to the mollusk family along with oysters. They crawl along on a single foot over a thin layer of slime that they produce to ease their way. Snails carry a shell on their back into which they can retreat when threatened. Slugs do not have shells. Both are mostly active at night, particularly when conditions are moist.

Louisiana Landscapes in Winter

Article Image Alt Text

By Dan Gill

LSU AgCenter Horticulturist Our winter landscapes look decidedly different from our landscapes in summer for two major reasons. First, many of our shade trees drop their leaves in winter, and in their leafless state their appearance is stark and bare. In addition, our lawn grasses go dormant in winter and turn brown.

Lawns can be overseeded with ryegrass if a green winter lawn is desirable (and you don’t mind continuing to mow). But nothing can be done about the trees.

Plants that drop all their leaves at one time and enter a leafless, dormant state are called deciduous. In climates that experience cold winters, such as the northern U.S., this leafless time for trees and shrubs is during winter when subfreezing temperatures occur.
