Book Club Enjoys ‘A Redbird Christmas’

“A Redbird Christmas” by Fannie Flagg was the December Books and Biscuits Book Club selection. The group members met at Cook-Hill House on Dec. 5 and were greeted by innkeeper Tamara McKinley with a beautifully decorated house using the redbird theme.

Discussion leader Edith Herring presented each girl with a redbird necklace before leading the discussion on Fannie Flagg’s wonderful Christmas story about a little southern town that comes together to save a little girl and in doing so redeems the main character Oswald T. Campbell who was given just a few months to live.

Former Judge Speaks with Lions Club

The Mansfield Lions Club had former Judge Robert Burgess as its special guest speaker. Burgess provided some history of the De Soto Parish Court House and the associated buildings around the Court House.

There have been many changes, upgrades and remodeling over the years to these facilities. With such a historic Court House, the entire community and Police Jury need to continue to work and support the maintenance of these facilities.

BackAlley Winter Musical Continues This Week

BackAlley Theatre's winter musical Winter Wonderettes continues this week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. at the theater in Grand Cane.

The play offers audience participation and Bill Cunningham is made to be the stand in Santa in this scene from the play, as Paula Callendar and Stacie Hinds sing their Christmas wishes to him.

DPSO Captain Speaks with Lions Club

The Mansfield Lions Club had Capt. Jayson Richardson from the De Soto Parish Sheriff's Office as their special guest and speaker.

Captain Richardson wanted to share with the Lions Club and De Soto Parish residents concerning recent events regarding shootings at public events and most recently at a church in Texas.

The De Soto Parish Sheriff's Office has been working with churches and other groups for several years on security and safety for public events and services. Capt. Richardson emphasized the importance of training and preparation needed for any security procedures for any group.

MHS Class of 1967 Celebrates 50th Reunion

The Mansfield High School Class of 1967 had their 50th Reunion recently. The reunion was a weekend long celebration with class members renewing old friendships and memories. Teachers and coaches from 1967 attended several of the reunion events also.

Stonewall Homemakers Meet

The Stonewall Homemakers met Nov. 9 at the Stonewall Town Hall to decorate the Christmas tree and to fill and deliver goody bags to the Stonewall Retirement Center. There is no meeting in December, and their January meeting will be a visit to the Stonewall Library.

Dinner Bells on Display at the Mansfield Main Library

In perfect time for the Thanksgiving feast, Christo Lancaster displays some of her “Dinner Bell” collection at the Mansfield Main Library throughout the month of November. Besides some of the ones pictured above, she also has outdoor dinner bells, cast iron dinner bells as well as oldfashioned dinner bells. Lancaster said, “I just love dinner bells! I’ve been collecting them for over 20 years.”

Christmas Musical Coming to BackAlley Theatre

BackAlley Theatre will usher in the Christmas season with its 60’s musical The Winter Wonderettes running two weekends beginning Nov. 30 and running through Dec. 9 at the theater in Grand Cane. Tickets are $10 and reservations are required. Box office is 461-0202 or email reservations to batboxoffice@gmail.com.

The Winter Wonderettes follows four high school friends as they entertain at a Harper’s Hardware Christmas party in 1968, where one of the girls works.
