Bluegrass Band to Perform Last Show Next Weekend

BackAlley Show Coming Up

Tiffany Turner Harrison will be part of the Heart and Soul Bluegrass Band entertaining at BackAlley Theatre on Nov. 3 and 4 and Nov. 17 and 18. The band from Benton Arkansas loves gospel music, and the old hymns are a favorite source for their material.

Mansfield Garden Club Holds October Meeting

The Mansfield Garden Club met Oct. 19 at the DeSoto Parish Library with President Gail Gage presiding. Members answered the roll call by telling how many bird feeders they have. The club’s goal is for everyone maintains bird feeders. The club is close to a 100 percent. Attendance almost doubled the September attendance.

Treasurer Ott Murphy gave the Treasurer’s report. The club voted to send a donation to help rebuild the public gardens that received damage during the recent flood. President Gail Gage reviewed an article from the National Gardener on protecting the environment urging members to reduce the amount of plastic that is placed in the garbage.

Floral Designs on Display at Logansport Library

Tamara White enjoys making floral designs. She got started making the designs when she saw different flower arrangements that caught her eye. She felt like it would be fun. When asked what her favorite part of the creations was, she stated it was the finished project.

GCHS Class of 1960 Reunites

The Grand Cane High School graduating Class of 1960 gathered recently in the Village Eatery in Grand Cane for lunch, fellowship and remembering their school days. Class members traveled from Bunkie, Pineville and Shreveport to join classmates that remain in the Grand Cane area.

Don Edwards Chosen as DAC Featured Artist

The Desoto Arts Council is proud to announce that nationally renowned wildlife artist and photographer Don Edwards will be the feature artist at the DAC Gallery on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. during the Grand Cane Car Show. Edwards may be best known locally for his Red Headed Woodpecker and Wood Duck paintings, but has received acclaim for his African wildlife and Teton painting as well.

LSMSA Hosts Annual Matriculation Ceremony To Welcome New Students

Natchitoches—The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts welcomed 157 new students during the school’s annual matriculation ceremony held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium located on the campus of Northwestern State University.

The ceremony recognized students’ accomplishments, reinforced their commitment to LSMSA and encouraged them to apply the necessary diligence to persevere until reaching commencement.

Book Club Discusses Backman Novel

Books and Biscuits met at the Cook House Bed and Breakfast in Grand Cane for their October meeting. Tedine Soule led the discussion on Fredrik Backman’s “A Man Called Ove.” Backman’s book is considered among Sweden’s most popular literary exports since “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” When Backman sent out this debut novel, most publishers ignored him and several turned it down. Four years later, it has sold more than 2.8 million copies worldwide.

Vehicle Showcase Features Tim Horn

Tim Horn said he had always been a car nut and was always looking through publications looking for just the right vehicle to restore. There it was. In a scrap yard in Mt. Home, Arkansas. He called and asked to see pictures of the truck and still went to Arkansas. The owner of the business was proud to sell him a rusted out shell of a 1954 Ford F-100 pickup truck. It must have looked pretty bad to someone who didn’t share in his vision because his wife wasn’t so sure she wanted this brought home to Shreveport.
