The Farm Wife

Article Image Alt Text

“Your Successful Farm Business” is one of Joel Salatin’s latest books.

One of my favorite writers on anything farming has to be Joel Salatin. Joel’s books are chock full of information. Quite often he adds a humorous note – just consider the title of one of his books, “The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs,” and you will understand what I mean.

In his latest book, “Your Successful Farm Business,” Joel gives you a little over three hundred pages of down-to-earth information from Working Landscapes (Chapter One), through Elclectic Awareness, Living Frugally, a Can Do Entrepreneurial Spirit and all the way to New Opportunities that can help make your farm more profitable. These are all things that any size farm can do – from just an acre or two all the way up to 100 or more acres.

Community Enjoys Cookie Class

Article Image Alt Text

On July 11, a group of home bakers gathered at the Mansfield Main Library to learn the art of decorating cookies. The class was taught by Lartoshee Edwards, library clerk. The objective for the class was to inspire people to start baking and be creative in experimenting in the kitchen.

In developing a painting, you must prep the canvas. So the class began with discussing the necessities for creating the perfect cookie and design concepts. Next, as in painting, the class began mixing icing, coloring it and tinting it to match the color palette. Finally, the moment arrived for hands-on experience. Everybody enjoyed themselves adding sprinkles, sugar pearls and colored sugar to their edible artwork.

“The eagle represents a majestic ideal that we are all able to soar to any height to achieve our goals and can take pride in accomplishing them,” Tyler said. He also said that being a Veteran, this is his way of showing pride in our country and those who have served and are still serving to protect our freedoms and rights.

Lions Club Guest Defends Her Faith at Meeting

Article Image Alt Text

A few years ago, students approached Allison Davidson Carpenter and asked for her help with a project they were working on that videos people’s responses to three questions: Do you believe in God, why or why not? Do you believe the Bible is true, why or why not? Do you believe Christianity is the one true religion, why or why not? Carpenter was unable to answer them.

“You think you can answer those, but I realized pretty quickly that I could not articulate answers except maybe sentences using the word faith, but nothing really beyond that and it was really disturbing to me because I’d been a Christian for 34 years,” Carpenter said. “Whenever they turned the video camera on, I thought no, just turn the video camera off and I promised them that I would take those questions and really ponder them and learn how to answer them well.”
