The Mansfield Garden Club met Wednesday, December 19 for its Christmas party. Members and guests enjoyed a Christmas meal with all members contributing food. Games for the meeting included an ugly sweater contest, best socks contest and a memory contest. Also, members guessed how many pieces of candy were in an old fashioned Mason jar. Velda Neilson won the socks contest with Emma Mouser winning the memory contest.

Beth McLaren gave information for growing and taking care of poinsettia plants. The temperature should be 60 to 70 degrees and placed in a sunny spot near the window. You should water them once or twice a week. The easiest way to do this is to use ice cubes. With a sixinch pot should take 6 cubes and an 8-inch pot around 8 cubes every 3 to 5 days. You should treat the poinsettia the same as annuals when the plant becomes unkempt, put it in the compost pile and recycle the container.

DeSoto Parish Animal Shelter joins the ranks of shelters in using facial recognition technology to identify lost dogs and cats. This shelter now offers their community an additional tool to help lost and adoptable dogs and cats find their forever home.

Now every dog and cat that enters the DeSoto Parish Animal Shelter system becomes registered on Finding Rover. Users of Finding Rover can search the shelter and surrounding areas right from their smartphone or computer in efforts to find their missing pet, a neighbor’s missing pet, the family of a found pet, or search for adoptable pets.

Every dog and cat that leaves DeSoto Parish Animal Shelter, through a reunion or an adoption, can remain protected on Finding Rover when the pet parent registers on Finding Rover with the same email address that the shelter has on file. If that dog or cat ever gets lost, their record will already be in the system, and identifying that pet will be a snap.

The year 1939 provided us with favorite movies such as The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, which won Oscars and have set record movie sales, both at the box office and through the sale of first videos and now DVD’s. The two movies, however, are not the only things in the entertainment field that occurred in 1939; the world also was introduced to the Christmas story of “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer”.

Do you remember the children’s Christmas Carol, “The Friendly Beasts”? It’s the one where the animals of the manger are telling their part as witnesses to birth of Baby Jesus. The donkey tells about carrying Mary, who was with child, up hill and down. The cow states she gave Him her manger for his bed. Other animals tell their part of the story all centering around “Jesus, our Brother…Kind and Good”. Some of these beautiful animals visited the Stonewall Library where the young patrons could pet and love on the animals that are most associated with the Nativity.

The Logansport Chamber of Commerce organized a fundraiser event for the Javier Simpson Memorial Scholarship Fund. A check was presented by Chamber President Mark Armstrong and Secretary Wendy Shinault to Head Coach Kevin Magee, brother Emmanuel Simpson, and Logansport Administrative Assistant Chris Thomas. Special thanks to Joaquin Whataburger, Logansport Dairy Queen, Cornerstone Ministry, LHS DI Club, and First United Methodist Church of Logansport. If awards were presented to the person that traveled the furthest to attend this year’s Grand Cane Pioneer Christmas Parade and Festival, it would have to be presented to Bill and Sharon Shetley’s guest, Pastor Hoppy Pohlmann, who is a citizen of South Africa.

Hoppy has been in the United State on a mission trip through the XHOSA Gospel Ministry based in East London, South Africa. The ministry and mission are dedicated to the well being of the Xhosa people in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa, through presenting of the Gospel and striving to help people meet basic need of health, education and training, motivated by the love of God. His trip has enabled him to spread the love and gospel of Jesus Christ in the United States.

Projects addressed by Xhosa include an AIDS Home, “House of Mercy”, which is a type of Hospice, preschools, Foster Care Homes and Orphanages, sewing lessons and several other life skill opportunities.
