UMShare School Uniform Distributions Set for July 22, 23, 25 & 26

Local students who do not have a means to obtain needed uniforms for the upcoming school year have help available. The local UMShare organization has collected gently used, and new, uniforms that will be given to families in need the week of July 22nd – July 26th. Uniforms are available for all DeSoto Parish schools.

Students attending Logansport and Stanley schools may come with parents to the First United Methodist Church of Logansport during these times: Monday, July 22nd, 4:00-7:00 pm or Tuesday, July 23rd, 2:00-6:00 pm.

Students attending Mansfield or North DeSoto schools may come with parents to the First United Methodist Church of Mansfield during these times: Thursday, July 25th, 5:00-7:00 pm or Friday, July 26th, 2:00-5:00 pm.

Books and Biscuits Club Discuss “Where the Crawdads Sing” at July Meeting

Books and Biscuits Book Club met at the Village Grille in Grand Cane for its July 2nd book review and lunch.

After a delicious lunch of spaghetti and cupcakes, the group discussed the book “Where the Crawdads Sing”, a very interesting book set in the swamps of North Carolina. The book dealt with a young girl who is left alone to survive in the marshes and learns valuable life lessons from the creatures around her.

DeSoto Parish to Benefit from State Enterprise Funds

Visitor Enterprise Funds have been released to DeSoto Parish following a request

made by the DeSoto Parish Tourist Bureau which Representative Larry Bagley, member of the House Appropriations Committee in the State Legislature and Logansport resident, was able to successfully fulfill. These funds are a rebate to the parish from the 4-cent sales tax paid by guests on overnight accommodations. By legislation, Visitor Enterprise Funds for DeSoto Parish are divided between the DeSoto Parish Tourist Bureau, the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce, and the Logansport Chamber of Commerce. These three organizations have received periodic releases since the fund’s inception in 1997-98.

Emma Mae Allen Celebrates 99th Birthday

On June 18, family and friends gathered in Gloster to celebrate the 99th Birthday of Emma Mae Allen. Her husband was the late Robert Allen, and they made their home in Grand Cane. Of this union, 8 children were born, including Ella Banks, Luther Allen, Bobbie Allen Edward, Emma Brooks, Irene Johnson, James Robert Allen, Rosie Blow and Rubbie Smith. Those eight children in turn blessed “Momma” with 22 grandchildren, 54 greatgrandchildren, and 30 great, great-grandchildren.

“Momma’s” actual date of birth is June 18, 1920, so the party was a couple of days early. The celebration included food and fellowship, with a beautiful birthday cake baked especially for Emma Mae. Lots of family stories and memories were shared making the celebration complete.

MLK Health Center Visits IPMansfield for Wellness Checks

MLK Health Center and Pharmacy recently visited at the International Paper Mill – Mansfield to conduct an employee wellness check, which included PSA screenings for men and mammograms for women. MLK Center expressed their gratitude to BHP for funding this opportunity, which enabled them to care for the Center’s neighbors in DeSoto Parish.

Shiloh Community to Celebrate July 4 on Holmes Road

Organizers in the Shiloh Community will host a July 4th Fireworks Celebration, featuring not only the display but the Blake Brothers Bluegrass Band. Music is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the fireworks to begin at dusk. Hamburgers, hot dogs, water and cold drinks will be available for this family friendly event. Attendees are asked to bring their own folding chairs, blankets and insect repellant. The event will take place at 1389 Holmes Road in Shiloh (Keachi for you GPS users).

Christian’s Lemonade and Snack Stand Opens for the Season

Some of you have been fortunate enough to taste some of Christian Palmer’s delicious lemonade varieties at occasions around Mansfield. Recently, his lemonade was the star beverage attraction at Jenkins Funeral Home’s Ground Breaking Ceremony and after celebration. The cool and fruity drink is extremely refreshing after being in the Louisiana sunshine, as our days grow warmer. On Saturday, June 15, Christian’s Lemonade and Snack Stand officially opened for the season.

Fellowship Community Church Takes Men & Boys Canoeing Trip

Jay Burford, founder of Fellowship Community Church in Gloster, took a group canoeing on the Buffalo River on June 11-14th. This year marks the 30th annual trip that Jay has led, 30 consecutive years in a row. This year’s group consisted of 40 men and teenage boys. It’s a four-day trip that always starts at noon on a Tuesday and ends around 2:00 p.m on Friday.

Betty Dillard Holder Celebrates 90th Milestone

On Friday, May 31, 2019, Betty Dillard Holder was honored on her 90th birthday with a celebration at the home of Butch and Synda Dillard in Frierson.

“Aunt” Betty grew up in the Sardis Community, which is located between Farmerville and Ruston, and was married for 62 years to John Felix Holder, who is now deceased. The union resulted in two sons, Johnny and David, who also have passed. The Holders were the owners and operators of the popular Mr. Swiss Restaurant for 32 years, which ceased to operate under their ownership when John passed away in 2009.

On May 23, 2019, the DeSoto Council on Aging sponsored the Older American’s Day Celebration at the DeSoto High Alumni Association located at 1216 Old Jefferson Hwy in Mansfield.

Senior citizens of Desoto Parish, ages 60 and above, enjoyed lunch provided by DeSoto Parish Sheriff ’s Office.
