Rising at 3:00 a.m. Shah Mir arrives at Grand Cane Station by 4:00 a.m. to greet his first customers. As the only gas station between Mansfield and Kickapoo along heavily traveled 171, commuters stop for a fill up and a beverage or hot breakfast. Each customer is greeted with a smile and by name or a descriptive nickname that Shah has given to his regulars.

The distance in miles between Shah’s hometown of Karachi on the Indian Ocean in the south of Pakistan and Grand Cane would seem to be great. Desiring to live in a more moderate climate, Shah’s parents had moved from the Himalayas of northern India to Karachi where he and his 8 brothers and sisters grew up.

They protect children from neglect and abuse and help form new families through adoption. Social workers are in hospitals, helping patients get the best possible care not only while in treatment but when they return to their families and communities. And they help those cope with the loss of loved ones.

A large crowd gathers at the Grand Cane Post Office each weekday morning at 9:00 to await arrival of the train that brings letters from family and friends or packages from Sears & Roebuck. While waiting for the mail to be “put up” friends and neighbors spend time visiting and catching up on the latest community news.

George N. Parker had purchased the building in 1910 to operate a mercantile business. It later served as a Post Office. Eventually the train stopped running through Grand Cane and the Post Office moved to another location in a newer building. Crowds ceased to gather. This historic building was abandoned and fell into a serious state of disrepair. However, after many years two visions came together resulting in birth of the 4 C Coffee House.
