Happy New Year Traditions Celebrated and Remembered

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon, after the Vernal Equinox, which is the first day of spring. Traditions of the season include the making of New Year’s resolutions that also dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions might include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

Reed Scholarship to be Awarded to Future Educators

The daughters of Annie E. and Hoyt J. Reed have endowed a scholarship honoring their parents to be awarded to a Louisiana native junior or senior level or graduate students majoring in teacher education or educational leadership at Northwestern State University. Applicants for the Annie E. and Hoyt J. Reed Scholarship must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and work in a public school or institution of higher education in Louisiana.

Applicants should complete an online application form and attach a 250-word essay indicating teaching and personal goals in the field of education. Applications will be reviewed by the family-named scholarship committee and will be awarded for a maximum of two semesters at $500 per semester.

This Saturday, December 14, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., The Fabulous Smackwater Band, with Louisiana Hall of Fame vocalist Billy J. Morris, will be featured on the Riverbank Stage at the 93rd Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights.

Christmas Toy Drive Underway in Mansfield

A Christmas Toy Drive, “Operation Toys Rx”, is underway for children ages 1 to 12 years of age. Organizers have been accepting cash and toy item donations to benefit less fortunate families in need of assistance.

Toy drop-off locations include Mansfield Drug and the Mansfield Fire Department. The official toy giveaway will be December 14 after the Mansfield Christmas Parade, will be held in the Pavilion in downtown Mansfield.

KCS Holiday Express Rolls Into Mansfield on Sunday, Dec. 8

The Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express will be making scheduled stops along the company’s rail network. It will be bringing Santa Claus and his elves to visit each community, spread holiday cheer and awe spectators with a fully lit and decorated Christmas train. Each event is free and open to the public. Guests will be able to visit with Santa in the caboose and tour three of the cars filled with Christmas displays and electric model trains. After touring the cars, children will receive a free gift bag.
