Logansport Jr. High Cheerleader to Perform in 2016 Citrus Bowl

The Logansport Junior High cheerleaders will be performing in the 2016 Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The teams invited to perform in the pre-game performance are trophy winners from Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) and National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer camps, brands under the Varsity Spirit umbrella. Varsity Spirit is a leader in educational camps, clinics, and competitions, of which more than 350,000 cheerleaders and dancers attend each year.

“Welcome To Logansport, Louisiana” Billboard Erected

The new billboard welcoming visitors to Logansport and to Louisiana was erected on December at the entrance to the new Sabine River Bridge connecting Louisiana and Texas at Logansport and Joaquin. The new bridge is scheduled to open in January, 2016, and eastbound visitors will be welcomed by the new sign.

Krewe of Demeter Plans Inaugural Mardi Gras Parade in Mansfield

Krewe of Demeter Captain Danny Procell has issued an invitation to all civic groups, clubs, school groups and individuals to join in the first Mardi Gras parade to ever roll down the streets of Mansfield on Saturday, January 23 at 1:00 PM.

Mansfield High Schoolʼs Athletic Booster Club has a tradition of selling fireworks as one of their annual main fundraisers. This year is no exception as the familiar fireworks stand returns to the Market Basket grocery store parking lot, located on Hwy 84 (Washington Avenue).

DeSoto Parish Displays Receive Three Golden Bulb Awards from KTBS News

Logansport’s beautiful riverfront adorned with “1,000,000 lights” was recently highlighted on KTBS Channel 3’s morning show during Rick Rowe’s “Mystery Monday” segment. Three separate interviews and airings took place during the morning show that airs live from 4:30 AM until 7:00 PM. Response to the show has gotten the word out far and wide of the incredible lights and Christmas displays that Chairman Debbie Amox and her volunteers worked so hard to complete before Thanksgiving.

DeSoto Parish Retains “B” Label for School District; Leads State in Graduation Rates

Superintendent Cade Brumley has reported that DeSoto Parish Schools have retained their level as a “B” school, earning a District Performance Score (DPS) of 89.0. Desoto increased in every scored index including dropout reduction, end-of-course exams, ACT, strength of diploma and graduation rate, with the exception of Grades 3-8 Assessment Index (PARCC testing of Common Core).

New Members Elected to DPPJ; Waterworks 1 Tax Renewal Fails

The DeSoto Parish Police Jury will have three new members seated in 2016, with the defeat of two current jurymen and the replacements of a retiring member. The representative for District 2 will be Jim “Jimbo” Davlin who replaces A. W. McDonald, who did not seek re-election. Davlin defeated Ken Kaffka in a runoff, with Davlin receiving 495 votes to secure 52% over Kaffka’s 451 votes, or 48%.
