Bank Celebrates Customer Appreciation

Workready Committee Starts Initiative to Make WorkKeys More Viable in Job Searches

High schools have started testing students in ACT WorkKeys. However, once students leave school and apply for jobs, not many companies in this region are checking for WorkKeys because not many employers know what it is. To combat this, the North Louisiana Economic Partnership is working with local businesses and community members to get more employers to see the scores from WorkKeys as a viable initiative.

Corley Releases 100-Day Plan

New superintendent Clay Corley has announced his 100-day plan. During his first 100 days, he plans to establish a collaborative, positive and productive working relationship with the board. He also plans to experience and learn the “DeSoto Way” to better understand the people, programs and systems that have made DeSoto students and campuses successful.

In his first 100 days, Corley plans to listen to all key stakeholders to understand critical issues facing the district and gain knowledge of ways the district can continue to improve. He wants to develop relationships with DeSoto Parish School Board partners and the greater community. He will issue frequent messages and press releases via written communication and electronic media. He will attend at least one student activity at each campus.

Chamber Speaker Discusses Workforce Commission Resources

Mechelle Broussard spoke about the resources Louisiana Workforce Commission offers during the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce’s May meeting. The commission supports and serves Louisiana’s employers, job seekers and workforce partners. She explained that they offer a variety of services and information that people can take advantage of by visiting their website or their field office.

911 Administrator Explains New Permit Fees

DeSoto Parish E-911 Board recently voted to start charging permit fees to issue residents a 911 address. Administrator Bruce Vanderhoeven attended the Police Jury’s May Committee Meeting to explain the fees’ purpose to the jury.

E-911 charges a $10 reconnection fee, a $20 changing owner/occupant fee and a $30 new address fee.

DeSoto Parish Listed as Top 10 System in Graduation Rate

The DeSoto Parish School System continues to be in the top tier of Louisiana School districts for Cohort Graduation Rate. A recent data release shows that DeSoto Schools are graduating seniors on time at a rate above 93 percent. This rate places Desoto Parish at a ranking of 6th among the 70 school systems in Louisiana and the highest ranking district in North Louisiana.

A graduation cohort rate is determined at the Louisiana State Department of Education by measuring how many students graduate within four years of starting high school. This means that students who began at a school as a ninth grader graduated, on time, four years later. DeSoto Parish has maintained a rate above 90 percent in this area over the last four consecutive years.

Outgoing Mayor Offers 16-Year Progress Report

City of Mansfield Mayor Curtis W. McCoy and the Mansfield Board of Aldermen have achieved many accomplishments over the past 16 years under the outgoing mayor’s leadership. Since 2002, the mayor and aldermen have worked together to serve the constituents in their respective districts and make changes in administration, infrastructure, city-owned facilities, commercial developments, and ordinances.

“With assistance from the Board of Aldermen and the City Hall administrative staff, I have worked diligently to leave the City in great shape from a financial standpoint,” McCoy said in a personal statement. “Also, the infrastructure improvements made during my 16- year administration should hopefully afford my successor the means to ensure that the City remains progressive.”

Sheriff Election Gets Underway as 2 Candidates Begin Campaign

Qualifiers are still two months away, but that has not stopped two local law enforcement officers from announcing their campaign for sheriff. Interim Sheriff Jayson Richardson and Police Chief Gary Hobbs have announced their intent to run in the election.

Hobbs has served the past five years as police chief for the Mansfield Police Department. He started his career as a part-time dispatcher and worked his way up to police chief in 2013.

DeSoto Parish School Board Names Clay Corley as New DeSoto Parish Superintendant

Mansfield, LA — The DeSoto Parish School Board named Clay Corley as the new superintendent of schools at Thursday night's meeting.

Corley, currently a Deputy Network Leader for the Louisiana Department of Education, will begin serving in his new role in DeSoto on May, 9. He will replace interim Superintendent Kathy Noel, who has been in the role since March 23rd when Dr. Cade Brumley resigned to become Superintendent in Jefferson Parish.

Corley has broad educational experience, including 6 years as a District Director and Interim Superintendent in Sabine Parish Schools. Corley is a native of Florien, Louisiana and is a graduate of Northwestern State, where he received a B.S. in Health and Physical Education and a Masters in Educational Leadership.
