DeSoto Parish residents have once against voted down DeSoto Parish Police Jury’s Parishwide Courthouse Proposition for a continuation of an ad valorem tax of 1.26 mills for 10 years. This is the third time that the Police Jury has requested the tax be renewed and voters have voted it down.

According to the Secretary of State’s election results, 1,251 residents voted for the proposition while 1,318 resident voted against it.

The DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office would like to recognize three deputies for their performance during the recent severe weather that occurred in DeSoto Parish.

Cpl. Obie Galey, Cpl. Vicki Page and Deputy Antoinette Turner received a call of a missing person, later identified as Adam Dickson, during the severe storm activity that affected our area this past week. All three Deputies, in addition to their already taxing duties during the storm, went above and beyond their duty by contacting the cellular provider to "ping" the cellular phone belonging to the individual.

Donna S. Johnson with Agape Life Solutions, LLC spoke at the April DeSoto Chamber of Commerce meeting. Agape Life Solutions is a faith based behavioral health program.

At Agape Life Solutions, they believe mental health issues are helped with faith. They use an overall holistic approach that includes faith, activities and talent.

Johnson said they are looking to get informaiton about whether or not they are needed in the area.

DeSoto Parish School System held their Students, Teachers and Principal Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, April 12 at DeSoto Parish School Board Instructional Materials Center. The school system recognized nominees and winners of Students, Teachers and Principal of the Year. Following the ceremony, DeSoto Parish School Board members recognized the parish winners during their meeting.

Lucien Marioneaux and Craig Williams presented a presentation on opioids during the DeSoto Parish Police Jury’s regular April meeting. After discussion, jurors agreed to join the two lawyers’ lawsuit against opioid manufacturers.

Stephanie Jamison grew up in DeSoto Parish. She has worked in the insurance industry for 13 years in the Shreveport area. When it came time for her to open her own agency, she decided to come back home and open one in Stonewall.

Stephanie Jamison Allstate Agency officially opened on Feb. 1. She held a grand opening on April 14 surrounded by her family, friends, co-workers and members of the community.

DeSoto Parish Mayors met on April 5 at Village Eatery for their quarterly Mayor’s Meeting. Mayors discussed what was happening in each of their communities. The DeSoto Parish School System has announced, and recognized, its 2018 cohort of Elite Scholars. This year's group of seniors, from across the parish, have demonstrated academic excellence thoughout their high school career in areas such as Grade Point Average (GPA), American College Test (ACT), and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. In order to qualify as an "Elite Scholar" a student must earn a designated amount of points in the above areas.

The students, along with their parents and family members, were recognized at a dinner in their honor. The Elite Scholars were joined by school administrators, elected officials, university officials, and various other dignitaries. The dinner was held in the multi-purpose room of Mansfield Elementary and Middle School and was coordinated by DeSoto Parish School Counselors.

Thomas Jones and the Mansfield Grambling Alumni donated $1,000 to support MMS W.I.N. Wars. W.I.N. Wars is an academic competition held between W.I.N. groups in all grade levels.
