Local Parishes Launch North Louisiana Ready2Work Team

Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto and Webster Parishes came together on  June 20 to launch a WorkReady Communities Initiative—North Louisiana Ready2Work Team— for north Louisiana to enhance the region’s ability to recruit companies and to train a skilled workforce. Through this initiative, the four parishes will work as a community to develop and work towards common goals tied to the ACT Work Keys test.

Sheriff Sues State Legislative Auditor Over Subpoena for Personnel Documents

The Louisiana Legislative Auditors have been auditing several District Attorney’s Offices and law enforcement entities, including the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office, in regards to involvement in the controversial L.A.C.E. Program. Recently, the audit in DeSoto Parish turned ugly as Interim Sheriff Jayson Richardson sued the auditor over a subpoena requested for his and several of his deputies’ personnel information.

Richardson petitioned for declaratory and injunctive relief and for a protective order against Louisiana Legislative Auditor Daryl G. Purpera.

DOTD Expects to Start Upcoming Highway 5 Project in August

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has contracted the reconstruction of LA 5. The project will reconstruct the roadway to assure longevity for the design life of the section being worked on.

In April, the DOTD bid out a $7.1 million project on LA 5 from Logansport to Thomas Road. The road is approximately 4.6 miles in length. This project will include stabilizing and rehabilitating the base of the roadway, then applying an asphalt overlay.

Tractor Supply’s Mansfield Location Set to Open in August

The construction of Tractor Supply in Mansfield is nearly complete. The store’s construction on began in early February. The store, which is located at 225 Lake Road, is set to open in August unless there are construction delays.

According to Grace Stewart with Tractor Supply’s Public Relations, the company thoughtfully chooses each new location. “The Mansfield location is perfect for Tractor Supply because of the area’s commitment to living life out here,” Stewart said. “Tractor Supply is excited to provide knowledgeable and friendly customer service in the area for years to come.”

Town of Stonewall Approves Bee Gum Festival Date

The Town of Stonewall held their town council meeting on June 12 at Stonewall Town Hall. The agenda included several agenda items to be voted on. Among the items was approving the date of this year’s Bee Gum Festival.

During the visitor’s forum, Kim Hicks suggested holding the Bee Gum Festival on the first weekend of October. The town council voted and approved the date.

Cleco Power Representative Discusses Storm Preparation with Mansfield City Council

Cleco Power’s Northern District Governmental Services Representative Harmon Dungan III attended Mansfield’s City Council meeting on June 11. During the meeting, he offered safety tips for hurricane preparedness. He also explained Cleco’s storm preparation and restoration process.

“We’re getting ready to get into hurricane season,” Dungan said. “We’ve already had some severe weather in this area, and seldom do you get affected by hurricanes, but the way we handle storms is done uniformly throughout the state.”

DeSoto Parish Police Jury Passes All Agenda Items

The DeSoto Parish Police Jury met June 11 for their regular meeting. Jurors voted and passed several agenda items.

The jury passed four new business items. The items included adopting the 2018 millage rates, approve waiving the $185 building permit fee for the Warrior Horse, approving the E-911 naming of A&M Farms Pvt. Drive off Harper Lane and authorizing jurors to attend the National Association fo Counties Annual Conference and Exposition in Nashville, Tenn.

City Approves Assistant Chief

City of Mansfield Fire Department Fire Chief LaTarsha Shelton presented her recommendation of promoting Captain A. Wayne Nichols to Assistant Fire Chief to the City of Mansfield City Council during their June meeting. Nichols has served as a firefighter with the city for 17 years.

Study Estimates LSU’s Economic Impact on DeSoto Parish at $9.1 M

Baton Rouge—A study by the Economics and Policy Research Group at the E. J. Ourso College of Business has determined LSU’s economic impact on DeSoto Parish to be $9,137,644.

The study, released in February, is the first to calculate the collective economic impact of all eight LSU campuses – LSU, the LSU AgCenter, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, LSU-Alexandria, LSU-Eunice, LSU-Shreveport, and the LSU Health Sciences Centers in Shreveport and New Orleans – at the parish level. Statewide, LSU has an impact of $5.1 billion.
