Shreveport Green Hazardous Waste Collection Slated for April 16

Due to the sponsorship of the DeSoto Parish Police Jury, Shreveport Green will provide DeSoto Parish residents a day of hazardous waste material collection to be held on Saturday, April 16, from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. For the convenience of Desoto citizens, 2016 sites include dumpsters at Logansport, South Mansfield and Stonewall. The three dumpster sites are strategically placed for the ease of usage for the yearly recycling opportunity.

Federal Public Defender Rebecca L. Hudsmith Selected to Speak at DeSoto Law Day Event

At 10:00 AM on Friday, April 29, the DeSoto Parish Bar Association cordially invites all public officials and the general public to join them as they celebrate Annual Law Day at the DeSoto Parish Courthouse, located at 101 Texas Street in Mansfield. Guest speaker for the event will be Rebecca L. Hudsmith, Federal Public Defender for the Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana.

Louisiana Survivors Should Register with FEMA; DeSoto DRC to Remain Open Indefinitely

Registering with FEMA is the only way eligible survivors in 30 designated parishes can get federal assistance, including DeSoto Parish. Disaster assistance for survivors may include grants to help pay for temporary housing and emergency home repairs to make a home habitable and other disaster-related needs.

Action Taxi Demolished as Reminder to Justin Bloxom’s Murder

Thursday, March 31 was the six year anniversary of the abduction and murder of 12-year-old Justin Bloxom by convicted murderer and sex offender Brian Horn of Keachi. Horn, who currently sits on death row after being found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to death in May 2014, filed his first appeal on this date in the process to overturn his conviction of death by lethal injection. In Mansfield, another event was taking place as the taxi that he had driven six years ago was about to ripped apart by a claw crane.

Delbert Terry Named New DeSoto Library Director

The DeSoto Parish Library Board of Control recently named Delbert Terry as the new library director. Terry has been the Adult Services Librarian in the DeSoto Parish system for the last three and one-half years. Previously, he was the Library Director for Bossier Parish as well as Natchitoches Parish. He replaces Linn Landis that retired from the director position in mid 2015.

Mansfield and Pleasant Hill to Observe Anniversaries of Historic Battles

The 152nd Anniversary of the battles of the Red River Campaign, marking the last major engagements of the Union Army’s ill-fated attempt to capture the Confederate stronghold at Shreveport, will be observed at the Mansfield Historic Site on April 9 and 10, and in Pleasant Hill on April 8, 9 and 10. In Mansfield, battlefield tours will be conducted at the park, along with lectures on the Battle of Pleasant Hill on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10. The battlefield tours will be given at 11:30 AM, and the lectures will be given at 3:30 PM inside the museum theater both days.

FEMA Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Grand Cane

Carl L. Henderson, representative of FEMA and the U. S. Department of Homeland Security has reported that a disaster recovery center has opened in Grand Cane at the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Department Training Facility. The facility is located at 120 Sprocket Lane, and will be open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sundays. Henderson continued that the center will be open for the next sixty days, and is scheduled to close on May 12, 2016.

Texas State Historian to be Featured Speaker at Rio de Sabinas Heritage Days

John William “Bill” O’Neal, the Texas State Historian, will be the key-note speaker for the Rio De Sabinas Heritage Days, to be held April 15 and 16 at the 140 year old First United Methodist Church of Joaquin, Texas. Dr. O’Neal has written forty-two books, and over 300 articles and book reviews. He has written about gunfighters, lawmen, ghost towns, Country music, and Texas League baseball. A member of the Western Writers of America, he has appeared in television documentaries on Turner Network Television, The History Channel, the British Broadcasting Corporation, the Discovery Channel, and the Arts and Entertainment Channel.

DeSoto Relay for Life to be Held Saturday, April 30

On April 30, DeSoto Parish residents and guests from all across our area will join together once again as they raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year’s event will center around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse square from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM. As in years past, vendors will be selling food, various snacks, beverages and related merchandise with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Mansfield Alive Announces Dates for 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration

The Mansfield Alive Committee is proud to present the dates for the Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration to be held June 24, 25 and 26, around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse Square. Festival favorites that will be returning include musical entertainment, food and beverage booths, arts and crafts booths and the parade. Also returning to this year’s festivities will be the Juneteenth Pageant on June 16 at the Clista A. Calhoun Center at 7:00 PM.
