Second Annual “Balloons Over DeSoto” Event Slated for Sunday, July 17

This weekend, colorful hot air balloons will be flying and landing at the C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport in Grand Cane. This year’s festival is in conjunction with the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce’s “Red River Balloon Rally”, with the DeSoto Parish portion sponsored by the DeSoto Parish Police Jury and the DeSoto Parish Tourist Bureau. The event will be filled with family fun with activities scheduled from 4:00 PM until the festival closes at 10:00 PM.

Area Clergymen Hold Prayer Vigil for First Responders

Pastor Donzel Hughes of St. Elizabeth Baptist Church and other local ministers hosted a prayer vigil at the Northwest Auditorium in Mansfield on Sunday, July 10. Those being honored and in attendance included Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle and members of the DeSoto Parish Sheriff Office; Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs and MPD officers; Mansfield Fire Department Chief Wayne Nichols and his firefighters; Fire District 8 Chief Fred Lowery and his firefighters; members of DeSoto EMS and Officers from the Many Police Department.

Brenda F. Ford Announces Candidacy for District Judge for 42nd Judicial District – Division A

Ford, has announced her candidacy for District Judge for the 42nd Judicial District Court of DeSoto Parish. “DeSoto Parish is home and home is where my heart is,” is what she told supporters of family, friends, local ministers and public officials as they stood by for the announcement on June 24 at the DeSoto District Courthouse.

Stonewall Police Officer Rick Martin Honored with the Hero of the Month Award

On Monday June 27th, Ericka Sumo presented the Homes For Heroes - Hero of the Month Award for June to Stonewall Police Officer Rick Martin. Judge Charles Adams Named Chief Judge of 42nd Judicial Court

Judge Charles Adams has been named Chief Judge of the 42nd Judicial Court, effective July1, 2016, after the retirement of Division A Judge Robert Burgess, who held that title. Adams explained that the senior judge is the usual appointee for the Chief Judge’s position. Judge Adams was born in Shreveport and raised in Keachi, which he still calls home. Upon graduating from Jesuit High School in Shreveport in 1979, he enrolled in LSU in Baton Rouge, where he received a B.S. degree in Accounting. He then took the path of becoming an attorney, and graduated from LSU Law Center in 1987. He served as Law Clerk for the Second Circuit Court of Appeal Central staff from 1987 to 1989 and was a law clerk for Chief Judge Pike Hall, Second Circuit Court of Appeal from 1988 to 1989. He then entered private practice as an attorney from 1989 to 1997. He also was an Assistant District Attorney from 1991 to 1997.

Jeremy Evans Takes Oath for Second Term as DeSoto Clerk of Court

On Thursday, June 30, Jeremy Evans took his second Oath of Office as DeSoto Parish Clerk of Court, with Judge Charles Adams officiating. Witnessing the ceremony were Evans’ wife, Christina, his children, Mason and Amelia, and Chief Deputy Susan Huey. Immediately following his swear-in ceremony, Evans’ deputy clerks were also administered the Oath of Office for the upcoming term. Evans was first elected as Clerk in 2011 and ran unchallenged in 2015. After taking the Clerk’s office he has implemented various services and programs that include the issuances of birth and death certificates, issuance of passports, the utilization of electronic payments, e-recording systems, esearch programs at each branch of the DeSoto Parish Library, and with the help of the 42nd Judicial Judges, his office has introduced the I-Jury system, which enables potential jurors to fill out their paperwork online.

Jared Mourad Band to Headline Logansport July 4th Event

Headlining this year’s July 4th celebration on the Logansport River Stage will be the Jared Mourad Band, set to begin at 7:00 PM. The concert, as well as the fireworks display, is free and open to the public. The band’s roster includes bandleader Jared Mourad on guitar and vocals; Matt “Moe” Moseley on guitar; Ryan Dougherty on Bass and vocals; Nick McCullough on drums and Shawn Lake on guitar and keyboard.

Sheriff Arbuckle Makes DeSoto Parish History Taking 5th Oath of Office

On Friday, June 24, Rodney Arbuckle made history in DeSoto Parish by taking the Oath of Office for the fifth time as Sheriff of DeSoto Parish. He is the only sheriff to be elected to five consecutive terms of office. Arbuckle was accompanied by his wife of 34 years, Carol, who held the Bible during the ceremony. Also witnessing the momentous occasion were his mother, Pat Arbuckle, and his son and daughter-in-law, Micah and Brooke Arbuckle. The Arbuckle’s other son and daughter-in-law, Ethan and Aly, who reside in Baton Rouge, were unable to be present.
