Civil War Reenactment, Oct. 27

On Saturday, October 27, Mansfield State Historic Site will re-create the gruesome aftermath of a Civil War during a special night tour of the Mansfield battlefield. Authentically costumed tour guides will take visitors onto the battlefield by candle lantern, as re-enactors depict various wartime scenes at stops along the trail. Tours last app. 30 minutes and will run ongoing starting at 7:30 pm, with the last tour departing at 9:15 pm.

DeSoto Clean-Up Roundup, October 20th

The committee to Keep DeSoto Beautiful met October 3 for a progress meeting. The discussion concerned the group logo and logistics for DeSoto’s October 20th Clean-Up Round up.

Keep DeSoto Beautiful is a new initiative that will help combat the litter and waste problems of DeSoto Parish. A First Appearance Survey was commissioned, and along with police jury members toured the most traveled and visible roads of the parish. The assessment found the parish was indeed “littered,” scoring a 1.98 on a 10 scale.

Sheriff’s suit against DA halts Grand Jury session

A DeSoto Parish Grand Jury expected to begin Monday came to an unexpected abrupt halt after current Sheriff Jayson Richardson filed a motion in court seeking to prevent District Attorney Gary Evans from proceeding.

While grand jury proceedings are secret, it’s speculated the Grand Jury was called to consider possibly criminal misconduct of DeSoto Parish deputies as it related to the LACE program. The District Attorney’s office and the Sheriff ’s office have been at odds since the DA took over the administration of the LACE program, as well as the funds generated from the program.

State, Parish respond to environmental emergency

The Department of Natural Resources recently declared and environmental emergency in Desoto Parish. The 9 square mile area named in the declaration is approximately centered at Louisiana Highway 3015 and Smyrna Road.

The emergency, named EMER 18-003, was declared because “gas was escaping from geological formations to the earth’s surface” according to Police Jury administrator and engineer Scott Brown.

The Mansfield City Council passed two Ordinances and accepted the revenue statements for 2018 during their regularly scheduled fourth Monday meeting.

DeSoto Parish Library holding town hall meetings

The Desoto Parish Library system is conducting of a series of town hall meetings, with one being held at each location. The Mansfield branch held their forum this past week. Library Director Delbert Terry led the meeting, which included library manager Diane Ross and library assistant director Bill Smith.

The town hall meetings have been formatted as a question and answer forum for library patrons. Director Terry opened with a quick introduction, and then opened the floor to the attendees to answer and ask questions.

Inquires were broad, with the opening question bring the most engagement. Terry asked simply, “What are the best, and worst, parts of the library experience?”

Environmental Emergency in DeSoto Parish

Since July of 2017, the Louisiana Office of Conservation has been engaged in responding to an area of the Wilcox Aquifer in DeSoto Parish with unusually high natural gas levels. New developments have led to a declared environmental emergency in Desoto Parish.

The area of concern currently is south of La. 3015, approximately halfway between Longstreet and Grand Cane.

An investigation led by Louisiana Office of Conservation agents determined that the pressure and elevated levels of natural gas in the Desoto Parish indicates the aquifer there is charged with gas.

Sheriff Richardson Gives Update on Current Projects

Sheriff Jayson Richardson gave a recent update about DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office’s current projects at a GOP luncheon meeting on Sept. 20. He discussed current projects DPSO is working on, including the new substation in Stonewall, a camera system being added to the Logansport substation and new radio towers.

DPSO is making progress on their new substation in Stonewall. They have finished the architectural work. They have negotiated with the Town of Stonewall for them to move into the new facility, and they are still negotiating with DeSoto Parish Police Jury.

Keachi Proclaims Sept. 23 as Edward A. Thomas Day

In a time of segregation, Keachi Native Edward A. Thomas joined the Houston Police Department as one of the police force’s first African American officers. African Americans were not allowed to drive HPD patrol cars, so he was assigned to foot patrol. Although some people within the department tried to get rid of him, Thomas persevered and earned the respect of his fellow officers. After serving 63 years in law enforcement, the Houston Police Department headquarters was renamed in his honor.

Mansfield Woman Killed in Crash

DeSoto Parish–Shortly before 11 a.m. on Sept. 22, Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two vehicle crash on La. 175 just south of La. 3015 in DeSoto Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Lincoln LS sedan driven by 19-year-old Kayla Allen of Mansfield was traveling south on La. 175. A 2015 Smart car driven by 18- year-old Kayla Ford of Mansfield was traveling north on La. 175.
