DPSO Introduces Academy Graduates

Mansfield Council Receives Bids for Water Treatment Chemicals

The City of Mansfield City Council authorized receiving and opening of all sealed public bids for chemicals for use at the city’s Water Treatment Plant during their meeting on Nov. 27. Four companies bid for the three chemicals—Aluminum Sulfate Solution, Caustic Soda Liquid 25 percent Diaphragm and Sulfate Solution TOTES.

GEO Specialty Chemicals bid $225 per dry try of Aluminum Sulfate Solution.

Chem Trade Chemicals bid $149.87 per wet ton or $308 per dry ton for Aluminum Sulfate Solution.

DA’s Office Teams Up with Technical College for Program

Northwest Louisiana Technical College and DeSoto Parish District Attorney’s Office are working together to develop and implement a 12-week diversion program called CHOICE. CHOICE provides an alternative to incarceration for non-violent, first-time offenders.

CHOICE is an acronym for Choosing to Help Others In the Community through Education.

The intent of the program is to provide an alternative to jail time for non-violent, first time offenders; to allow offenders to continue to work, care for family members; and/ or to pursue educational and other opportunities not available to incarcerated individuals; and to reduce the corrections expense of housing low-risk offenders.

Holiday Express Visits Mansfield

Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express stopped in Mansfield on Nov. 3. The Holiday Express featured cheerful displays, lights and music. Children and their families climbed aboard the train, visited with Santa and receive a bag of seasonal goodies.

Student Surprised with Scholarship

During Stanley High School’s morning announcements on Nov. 29, LSU Shreveport Admissions Counselor Tiberlee Barnum and Assistant Director of Admissions Bryan Babcock surprised Stanley High School student Hannah Jo Temple with a giant check for a $14,400 scholarship to the college.

Chamber of Commerce Elects New Board

DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce elected their 2017 Executive Committee Board during their November board meeting. They also elected the 2018 Board of Directors and three Honorary Lifetime Board Members.

The 2017 Executive Committee Board includes Brenda Hall, Executive Director; Carole Canfield, President; Dr. Cade Brumley, Vice President; Blaine Hodges, Second Vice President; Nicholas “Nick” Gasper, Secretary and Jayson Richardson, Treasurer.

Christmas Parade Ushers in Holidays in Logansport

Logansport held their 6th Annual Christmas on the Sabine on Nov. 18 in downtown Logansport. A Christmas Parade opened the evening, followed by a performance by Lyndsey Remedies Dance Studio, a presentation of awards and the crowning of the 2017 Ms. Noel.

MHS Recieves an “A” Rating

For the first time in school history, Mansfield High School has earned a letter grade of “A” from the Louisiana Department of Education. This acknowledges the efforts of the school in areas such as graduation rates, state test scores, dropout rates, quality of diplomas, and ACT scores. Mansfield High received a School Performance Score (SPS) of 100.8, up from a 96.7 the previous year.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate this accomplishment with the Mansfield High School community,” said Dr. Cade Brumley, DeSoto Parish Superintendent. “Accomplishments like this do not happen by chance; instead, they represent smart strategy, hard work, and a commitment to academic growth. Our schools provide excellent opportunities for students to receive a world-class education.”

LOGA Founder Brings Hope to DeSoto Oil, Gas Industry

DeSoto Parish residents may have noticed an increase in oil and gas vehicles on the road recently. The industry seems to be making a comeback.

Louisiana Oil and Gas Association (LOGA) President and Founder Don Briggs, who has been involved with oil and gas for 45 years, visited DeSoto Parish to give an update on oil and gas and the recent increase in activity.

According to Briggs, there is a lot of money being spent banking on Haynesville gas and Cotton Valley’s oil. Briggs said Cotton Valley is producing 2,300 barrels per day per well.
