South Mansfield Settles on Rental Fees for Community Center

The Village of South Mansfield voted on cost details regarding the Recreational Community Center at their June 13 meeting. To rent the building, it will cost $480. This includes a $180 using fee and a $300 deposit.

Springer Receives Award from DeSoto Parish EMS

DeSoto Parish EMS held a ceremony July 17 at the Central Station for Micayla Springer. Springer helped save Jewel Rogers’ life after a ballpark game by immediately performing CPR while waiting for EMS to get there.

DeSoto Parish Celebrates Hot Air Balloon Festival

Many people attended Balloons Over DeSoto to watch the hot air balloons fly onto the C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport.

Louisiana State Police demonstrated a rollover simulator.

Durr’s Pyromania provided a fireworks show to end the event.

DeSoto Parish Schools Recognized for American Heart Association Contributions

The American Heart Association recognized DeSoto Parish Schools for helping them achieve their mission of producing healthier lives free of Heart Diseases and Stroke. Schools in the parish raised $10,026. This money will be used towards research and grants.

Jill Lucero, who is with the American Heart Association, presented Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley with a plaque for the parish having 100 percent school participation in their programs at the July 6 school board meeting. Already 100 percent of the schools have registered for next year. This will be the fourth year DeSoto Parish has had 100 percent registration.

Cade Brumley Named President of Louisiana Superintendents Association

At a recent convening, the Louisiana Association of Superintendents selected a President for the upcoming year—Dr. Cade Brumley of DeSoto Parish. Each year, one of Louisiana’s Superintendents is selected to lead the organization.

“It’s an honor to be selected by my peers throughout the great State of Louisiana—I don’t take that lightly,” Brumley said. “Along with my colleagues, we recognize the superintendency is a challenging job but it also provides a great opportunity to help students, schools and communities in countless ways.”

3rd Annual July Fourth Rickey Warren Memorial Fireworks Show

DeSoto Parish Jury Finds Man Guilty of Molesting Juvenile

DeSoto Parish Courthouse jury has found James Pittman guilty of molesting two juvenile victims. The trial started June 12, and a verdict was reached June 14. After the jury found Pittman guilty beyond reasonable doubt, he was charged with molestation of a juvenile under the age of 13.

The criminal incidents took place in the Stonewall area between January 2013 and July 2015. On Sept. 18, 2015, officers were dispatched and a complaint was made about the incident. The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Stonewall Woman Competes in State Beauty Pageant

Miss Natchitoches Stephanie Parker of Stonewall competed in the 54th Annual Miss Louisiana Pageant in Monroe June18-24. Parker is one of 32 contestants who competed for the title. Although Miss Shreveport Laryssa Bonacquisti won the title for this year’s Miss Louisiana, Parker had a really great experience during the competition.

This was Parker’s first state competition, and she has only competed in three pageants.

DeSoto All-stars Team Makes State

The DeSoto All-stars T-ball team will play at the State Tournament in Shreveport July 6. They will play double elimination tournament. If they win first place they will go to World Series in Ruston.

The 6-Youth Ball team is made up of 12 boys who are ages five and six. The team was picked at an All Star Meeting from each of the five teams in the league.

DPSO searching for found horses' owner

The Desoto Parish Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate the owner of three horses that were located on LA Hwy. 513 on Saturday, July 1. The horses are described as follows:  one red mare with a white blaze face, one blackish gray mare and one red gilding with white stockings on both left legs.

To claim possession and retrieve the three horses, the owner will be responsible for all fees and cost to capture and impound the  horses. Interested parties should contact Lt. Phillip Daniels at the Desoto Parish Sheriff’s Office at (318) 872-3956.
