Hometown Firework Stand Open for Business

Mansfield Athletic Booster Club’s firework stand is now open for business for the 2017 Fourth of July firework season. The booster club has been selling fireworks toraise money for the athletic club for over 30 years. The money raised goes toward the football team’s food, travel, out of town buses and scholarships.

Police Jury Announces FEMA Not Offering Assistance

The Police Jury’s Administrator’s Report revealed that FEMA would not be offering any assistance to those in DeSoto Parish who were affected by the Memorial weekend storm.

Although GOSEP, who reports to FEMA, came up and saw the damage caused by the storm, FEMA decided that there was not enough for their assistance.

Recent Storm Discussion at Police Jury Meeting Prompts Inquiry

The aftermath of the Memorial weekend storm was a hot topic for the June 5 Jury Meeting. The back-and-forth question during public comments—was there a plan in place? According to the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) Administrator Todd Edwards, there was.

“We believe the response to this storm was excellent given the conditions and hardships faced by the responders,” Edwards said. “Of course, everyone would have liked the power to come back on sooner, but we ultimately have no control over that. Given the amount of damage to the power lines across the Parish we believe the electric companies did a great job restoring the electrical grid.”

Rabies Cases on the Rise in DeSoto Parish

The number of skunks with rabies is continuing to rise. As of June 12, DeSoto Parish Animal Services have found 17 skunk rabies cases.

Grand Cane Preservation Commission Suggests Adding Digital Signage to Town

The topic of digital informational signage was brought up during the Grand Cane Preservation Commission’s report at the Village of Grand Cane meeting on June 6. The committee had not come to a conclusion about the topic but did not see a historic problem with it. They recommended the council look at it, see if anyone else wanted digital signs and go from there.

Be Alert; Rabies Cases Found in DeSoto Parish

The state has reported 14 cases of rabies since February. All cases were found in DeSoto Parish.

Anyone with children or pets needs to be aware of the danger rabies poses.

Rabies is a medical urgency but not an emergency.
