Krewe Celebrates Christmas by Donating to Family in Need

Article Image Alt Text

Mardi Gras Krewe brings to mind fun, parades, good food, good times, good friends, and community, but it also means giving back, and that part—community—is what matters most. Desoto Parish’s one Krewe of Demeter is doing just that. Community projects, such as cohosting the now annual Desoto Parish Gumbo Cook off, nursing home projects, food drives for the animal shelter and a inner Krewe drive for toys and cash for the Sheriffs office to distribute to less fortunate are just a few.

Police Jury Releases Accomplishments in 2017

The DeSoto Parish Police Jury has released a 2017 Year-in Review of their accomplishments for the past year. Although there were some setbacks in projects, they were able to complete several projects for DeSoto Parish residents throughout the year. They have plans for completing several more projects in 2018.

According to Parish Administrator Steve Brown, “2016 and 2017 were challenging years to the DPPJ. The flooding in 2016 caused more than $1 million in damage to DPPJ assets, mostly roads. In 2017, more than 100 roads were closed during the peak of the storms. As a result of the inclement weather some of the scheduled roadwork was deferred to 2018.”

Gas Station Opens in Longstreet

Article Image Alt Text

Longstreet has been without a store for about 7 years, but that changed Dec. 14 when J.E.B.S. General Store opened. J.E.B.S. is an acronym that owner Jimmy Holmes came up with. It stands for him and his three children: Jimmy, Emily, Brian and Shelby.

Holmes said that he opened the store because he thought having a convenience/grocery store would be a good thing because there is not one in Longstreet. With the oil and gas business picking up, he thought it would be a good time to open one here.
