Mansfield Signs 4 Players on National Signing Day

Mansfield High School signed four Wolverine football players on National Signing Day: Travis Dewitt, LaKendrick Ross, Devin Washington, and Jordan Walker.

Travis “T T” Dewitt signed to play football at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. “Travis is an incredible football player,” stated MHS Head Coach Mike Green. “T T was recognized as an all-parish, alldistrict, and all-State player. He was a member of the Louisiana All-Star Football Team this year. HSU will be lucky to have an athlete of T T’s caliber.”Here is an excerpt from her autobiography:

DPSB Announces Parish’s 12th Grade Student of the Year

She was first named her school’s Student of the Year before competing at the district level against other very talented students from around the parish. Being named the district winner, she now advances to competition at the regional level where she will represent DeSoto Parish with pride.

Black History Month Spotlight

Good morning everyone and to all my African American or Black Kings and Queens, Happy Black History Month. I’m very proud to say this to say this is a great time as I reflect over my career. I am the first female and Black Fire Chief of the City of Mansfield since establishment in 1847 and DeSoto Parish. Thanks to the Mayor of Mansfield Curtis McCoy, Councilwoman Marylinda Green and City Council members. The first Black EMT-B for DeSoto Parish EMS, now serving as the EMS President of the Board of Directors, I was the first paid firefighter/EMT B for DeSoto Parish Fire Dist. #9.

School Board Votes on Employee Matters During February Meeting

The DeSoto Parish School Board voted on two employeerelated matters during their February meeting. The finance committee recommended a supplement for employees while Superintendant Dr. Cade Brumley recommended taking action to support a study group to look into the state’s teacher shortage.

During January’s financial meeting, the finance committee approved a one-time $1,200 supplement for employees for achieving an “A” in the parish’s school rating for 2016-2017. The school board amended the amount to $2,000 during their meeting on Feb. 1.

DeSoto Schools’ Grace House Opens

The DeSoto Alternative Program offers a place for students to go who are expelled or suspended besides just going home. DeSoto Parish School Board recently built a new facility that matches the caliber of the rest of the school buildings in the parish. The new facility is now open, and students from across the parish who have been expelled or suspended from their home school can attend the centrally located DeSoto Schools’ Grace House to receive an education and not fall behind.

“Just because a child makes a bad choice doesn’t make them a bad person,” Superintendant Dr. Cade Brumley said. “As educators we have an obligation to invest in these children where they’re back on the right track and reach their full potential.”

Gloster Man Arrested in Stabbing Incident

Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle wanted to notify the public of a stabbing incident that occurred last week.

At about 11:47 p.m. on Jan. 16, dispatch received a call from 911 in reference to a subject bleeding in the 300 block of Meadow Drive in Gloster.

Deputies responded to the area and located an adult male victim who had been stabbed multiple times. Deputies detained a suspect in the area. They later identified him as Dylan D. Johnson of Gloster. Johnson is a white male. His date of birth is July 4, 1995.
