On Friday, December 13, 2019, the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office received visits by Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Whitaker’s class from Mansfield High School. Students and teachers stopped by to greet Sheriff Richardson and deputies to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Students brought many containers of sweets to pass out as gifts and ornaments to hang on the Christmas Tree in the DPSO’s front offices. Each ornament was personalized with special messages of thanks from students.

On Monday, December 16, DeSoto Parish lost our oldest World War II veteran on record at 98 years of age. William “Billy” McElroy earned his silver wings to make his homecoming flight to heaven. He is survived by his wife, Jean Harris McElroy of Mansfield, daughters Margaret Hines of Los Angeles, CA, Susan Picket of Tampa, FL, Christy LoBue and her husband John of Keithville, step-daughter Debra Collier and her husband Bruce of Mansfield, Shane Harris and his wife Tammy of Stonewall, and grandchildren, Holly Hines, Blake Pickett, Will Pickett, Brady LoBue, Justin LoBue, and Christian LoBue as well as great-grandchildren Carson Pickett, Harlow Hines and Faith LoBue.

“Mr. Billy”, as he was affectionately known to most in Mansfield, was born on January 21, 1921 in Oil City, Louisiana to Jake and Ruby McElroy. His parents preceded him in death, along with his first wife of 56 years, Marjorie Carey McElroy, and his sisters, Dorothy Deen and Mary Ellen Register.

The Logansport Tigers saw their 2019 season end in the semi-finals of the Class 1-A playoffs. The Tigers traveled to Oak Grove to take on the Number 4 seeded Oak Grove Tigers. Logansport came into the game on a 7 game win streak with a 7-5 overall record. Oak Grove had posted a 9-3 record coming into the game. Oak Grove defeated the Tigers 41-0 to earn the right to play in the Class 1-A State Championship game.

On the first day of the National early signing period for the fall, Mansfield High School’s Senior Lady Wolverine standout point guard ShaKahia Warmsley inked her commitment to play at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Warmsley, a four-year varsity player for the Lady Wolverines and honor student at MHS, was recognized for her athleticism, work ethic, and academic achievements by Lady Wolverine Head Coach Kendra Neal Jones. “ShaKahia works hard both on the court and off the court. She is always working hard to improve her basketball skills, but she never backs down from an academic challenge,” stated Coach Jones.

On Monday, December 2, U. S. Representative of the 4th District Mike Johnson hosted Town Hall meetings in Sabine and DeSoto Parishes. These were the congressman’s 46th and 47th town halls, respectively, since taking office in 2017. During his address to the DeSoto group, he stated that many of his colleagues no longer held this type of meeting, but he felt they were beneficial to himself and his constituents, where needs and concerns are addressed in a forum of this type.

Johnson began the meeting by asking Rev. Thumper Miller of First Baptist Church in Mansfield to bless the gathering, with Stonewall Mayor Randy Rodgers leading The Pledge of Allegiance. He then introduced members of his staff that were in attendance.
