Logansport held their 6th Annual Christmas on the Sabine on Nov. 18 in downtown Logansport. A Christmas Parade opened the evening, followed by a performance by Lyndsey Remedies Dance Studio, a presentation of awards and the crowning of the 2017 Ms. Noel.

For the first time in school history, Mansfield High School has earned a letter grade of “A” from the Louisiana Department of Education. This acknowledges the efforts of the school in areas such as graduation rates, state test scores, dropout rates, quality of diplomas, and ACT scores. Mansfield High received a School Performance Score (SPS) of 100.8, up from a 96.7 the previous year.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate this accomplishment with the Mansfield High School community,” said Dr. Cade Brumley, DeSoto Parish Superintendent. “Accomplishments like this do not happen by chance; instead, they represent smart strategy, hard work, and a commitment to academic growth. Our schools provide excellent opportunities for students to receive a world-class education.”

DeSoto Parish residents may have noticed an increase in oil and gas vehicles on the road recently. The industry seems to be making a comeback.

Louisiana Oil and Gas Association (LOGA) President and Founder Don Briggs, who has been involved with oil and gas for 45 years, visited DeSoto Parish to give an update on oil and gas and the recent increase in activity.

According to Briggs, there is a lot of money being spent banking on Haynesville gas and Cotton Valley’s oil. Briggs said Cotton Valley is producing 2,300 barrels per day per well.

Do you know where your water comes from? This question was one of the main topics discussed during Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s DeSoto Parish community meeting. The meeting focused on where drinking water comes from and how individuals and water system workers can protect it. Almost all of the DeSoto Parish water systems were represented at the meeting.

In Louisiana, one-third of drinking water comes from surface water in lakes, rivers and bayous while two-thirds of drinking water comes from groundwater.

An inconvenience for some could be life or death for another. Once again the train that runs through Mansfield has stalled on the train tracks leaving people stuck on either side, including ambulances and other emergency vehicles en route to a call. First Responders are forced to work around this problem by dispatching other stations.

According to Brent Crawford, one of the main reasons they built the station on Hwy. 509 was so that they would not get stuck on one side of the train and not be able to reach people on the other.

For the second consecutive year, the DeSoto Parish School System has earned an “A” rating by the Louisiana Department of Education. In fact, the latest release of accountability results assign DeSoto a District Performance Score (DPS) of 103.1 – the highest performance in parish history.

In 2010, DeSoto Parish ranked 45th of Louisiana's approximately 70 school systems for academic performance. With these results, DeSoto now ranks 9th and is the highest performing district in North Louisiana.

“I am completely humbled by our continued climb in student outcomes,” said Dr. Cade Brumley, DeSoto Parish Superintendent. “These results reflect a team effort and our genuine desire to serve, care for others, ensure student learning, and celebrate the graduation of our students as citizens prepared to transform their dreams into realities.”

A fight between two girls in a bathroom at North DeSoto High School during lunch last week ended up on social media after a student who filmed the incident on her phone published it.

About a month prior, the victim in Monday’s fight approached Monday’s aggressor and attempted to instigate a fight. The other girl walked away and Monday’s victim was placed into In-School- Suspension. On Nov. 6, the roles reversed.

According to Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley, “Monday’s aggressor is now facing criminal charges as well as expulsion from school. Further, the student who videoed this and posted it to social media will face short-term suspension at our alternative site. Monday’s victim was taken to receive a medical exam but was not admitted into the hospital. She will not face any school consequences this time.”

Throughout DeSoto Parish, many children went Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. Downtown Logansport held trick-or-treating for children to go around and get lots of candy. Raymond Powell served in the military for three years during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 13th Army Division.

Powell had just finished his second year of college when he enlisted. He had been promised he could finish college when he got back.

Powell was stationed all over Europe. His first combat encounter was in Belgium Bulge. The Battle of the Bulge was the German’s last major offense.
