On June 12, 2020, four months after DeSoto Parish Deputy Donna Richardson-Below was killed in a car accident, the driver of the other car, Richard Wimer of Stonewall, was arrested for vehicular homicide and reckless operation. According to Louisiana State Police he allegedly was impaired and speeding during a rainstorm when he crashed into the deputy’s car. She was on duty at the time. Troop G spokesman Brent Hardy said that there was no further information available at this time.

Longtime district court judge Charles Adams announced his retirement, effective, Monday June 15 from the judicial bench in the 42nd Judicial District of Louisiana.

Adams, who was first elected judge in 1997 and was re-elected three times subsequently thereafter, retired to become a candidate for District Attorney in DeSoto Parish in the election to be held on November 3,2020.

“I am running for District Attorney to change the current direction and climate of the District Attorney’s Office,” said Adams.

On June 4, Gov. John Bel Edwards signed the order moving Louisiana to Phase Two of the White House plan for reopening, while cautioning members of the public and businesses to continue to take mitigation measures, like wearing masks when in public, to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 as more people will be interacting with each other.

Captain of Captains for the Northwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association, Tracy Herrin, is encouraging local Krewes to cancel Mardi Gras events due to the coronavirus. The Mardi Gras parades are still scheduled to roll in early 2021 if it is safe and responsible to do so.

“We are asking our local Krewes to cancel festivities and grand bals that lead up to the 2021 Mardi Gras season because of the enormous lead time for planning and venue selection,” said Herrin. “However, no decision has been made yet to cancel the 2021 parades.”

Specific events impacted include the theme announcements, coronations, Midway to Mardi Gras parties, 12th Night Celebrations, and grand bals.

“The safety and well-being of the community, as well as krewe members is our top priority,” said Herrin. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation, consult with city officials and keep the public informed.”

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that on Saturday, June 13, 2020, the railroad crossing on US 171 (Jenkins Street) in Mansfield, DeSoto Parish will be closed to allow Kansas City Southern to perform track maintenance.

The closure is scheduled to take place from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This crossing is located just south of the intersection of US 171 and US 84.

On June 4, .S. Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04), a member of President Trump’s Task Force for Reopening America, today announced DeSoto Regional Health System in Mansfield is receiving $240,390 from the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) COVID-19 Telehealth Program, authorized under the CARES Act. The award will go towards a telemetry video system, tablets, desktop computers, and connected telemedicine devices to support treatments, screenings, and follow-ups for COVID-19 patients without having to enter their room.
