The Mansfield Wolverines played host to the 2017 DeSoto Parish Jamboree this past Friday night before a packed stadium. The 3 Parish teams, Mansfield, North DeSoto and Mansfield, put on an exciting and electric show for their fans. Each team came into the Jamboree with one thing on their minds, not to suffer any injuries. Next week begins the regular season for each team. Mansfield will open at home against Huntington, North DeSoto will also open at home against Natchitoches Central, while Logansport will begin the defense of their State title on the road against Jonesboro-Hodge.

The NCAA has named three University of Louisiana Monroe athletic teams to the top 10 in Division I for outstanding academic achievements. The Warhawks men’s basketball, men’s golf and women’s cross country teams have each received the Public Recognition Award for an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their sport.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The top  APR score is 1,000. Men’s golf and women’s cross country both scored a perfect 1,000 and Warhawks men’s basketball scored 995.

Due to unfavorable field conditions at the DeSoto Baseball Park, the “Battle of the Badges” Softball Tournament scheduled for Aug. 12 has been moved to Saturday, Aug. 19.

Team check-in is from 8-8:45 a.m. and games start at 9 a.m.

River City Track Club has traveled near and far to Dallas, Mississippi, Monroe and Alabama. The have left behind a sting of winnings and bringing home the trophy. Their most recent win was in Alabama last weekend.

These kids are awesome thanks to Coach Word, Antonio Shannon, Candy Ross and the wonderful parents that took the time out to travel from state to state making sure that they had everything that they needed to stay focused so that they could all come home winners.

Several children are participating in Mansfield’s Youth Sports’ June Summer Camp. The camp, which is held from 6-8 p.m. for children ages 5-12, teaches basic drills. Several position stations are set up that kids rotate to in order for them to figure out which position they want to play and which position they are best at.

The First Tee program in Mansfield is trying to teach kids about golf and core values. During the school year, the Mansfield Middle School golf team comes over and practices.

KJVC Radio held its first Baseball/Softball All Parish Team Awards Reception on Thursday, May 18. The event took place at Phydeaux’s Crawfish and More in Grand Cane.

Terry Brown, a senior at Mansfield High School, placed first in the 110m hurdles while competing in the Louisiana State track meet at LSU Baton Rouge.
