MPD Chief Sets the Record Straight on Mansfield’s Listing Among the Most Dangerous Cities in Louisiana

A recent email that was sent out to media claimed that Mansfield was one of the ten most dangerous cities in Louisiana…in a recent study. It was a little odd that Shreveport, Baton Rouge and even New Orleans were not among those listed. The information continued to examine the crime data that caused Mansfield to make the list, which was complied by data released by the FBI in their Uniform Crime Report.

Desoto Fire District 8 Confirms Fred Lowery as Chief

The DeSoto Fire District 8 Board has confirmed Fred Lowery as the district’s chief as of September 4. He had first been named as Interim Chief on July 2, after Chief David Manning retired. The board then appointed him to the position of Probationary Chief on September 12, 2013. After reviewing his performance for the past year, he has been confirmed as Chief.

DeSoto Chamber Honors Daphne’s Tamales with Ribbon Cutting

The DeSoto Chamber of Commerce honored Daphne’s Tamales with a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening ceremony on Friday, September 12. Local officials, Chamber members, friends and relatives were in attendance to wish owner Daphne Hall well with her new business. Ms. Hall returned to Mansfield around eleven years ago after living in California for eighteen years. While living in California, she learned how to make tamales from a friend that had mastered her recipe of a Mexican favorite.

DPSB Considers Pay Raises; Halts Political Hand Outs at Ballgames

On September 4, the DeSoto Parish School Board held their regular meeting with all members present. Ms. Jerri Burrell continued her regular monthly statement as she addressed the board regarding her August questions. She emphasized once again asking how payroll amounts issued to administrative personnel could get past the finance committee. She did not call a specific name of whom she was speaking of. There are never any answers offered to Ms. Burrell’s comments, and after speaking she took her seat

Four-Year-Old Mansfield Child in Critical Condition from Burns

On Tuesday, September 2, a fire was reported in Meadow Park subdivision around 8:30 PM resulting in four-year-old Keyonta Wyatt to be air lifted for burns sustained from the incident. When firefighters and first responders arrived on the scene, the house was totally engulfed in flames.

Mansfield’s IP Plant Hit by Tornado

On September 2, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down at the International Paper Company in Mansfield. It was originally thought that the tornado was an EF-O but the tornado had wind speeds of 85 to 95 mph. The storm hit the plant around 2:19 PM.

DeSoto’s First Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event” Slated for October 10th

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes committee has been meeting regularly for several months making plans for the first annual event that will take place on Friday, October 10th around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse Square at 9:00 AM. The walk is being held to bring awareness to gender violence, rape and sexual assault within our community as well as nationwide. What better month to plan it than October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The DeSoto Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) continue to seek sponsors for their first Friends of the NRA Banquet, to be held on Thursday, September 25 at the Dave Means Memorial 4-H Building, located on Hwy  171 between Grand Cane and Mansfield

City of Mansfield Announces Lower Public Fire Protection Classification

In recent years, improvements have been made in the City’s Fire Department significant enough to lower their classification. The City has been under a Class 5 rating for over a decade (since January 2001). The Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (P.I.A.L.) recently notified the Mansfield Fire Department that their public fire protection classification was improved to a Class 4, effective September 8, 2014. This classification will be used by member companies of the P.I.A.L. to develop fire insurance premiums and may result in lower premiums for hundreds of households
