Parish Officials Compliment DPSB; One Time Supplement Approved

The DeSoto Parish School Board had their regular meeting on Thursday, October 2 with two parish  officials speaking before members to praise staff members for their work that put students’ welfare first and foremost. Sgt. Billy Locke of the Mansfield Police Department and DeSoto Coroner’s office spoke first, complimenting the fast thinking of a teacher that was contacted by a student with personal issues

First Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Event Set

With weeks of preparation coming to a close, the DeSoto Walk a Mile in Her Shoes committee is ready for the first annual event that is set for Friday, October 10. The committee has been meeting regularly for several months making plans for the event that will take place around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse Square at 9:00 AM. The walk is being held to bring awareness to gender violence, rape and sexual assault within our community as well as nationwide. What better month to plan it than October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Stonewall’s Bee Gum Festival Slated for Saturday, October 4

After weeks of planning and promotions, the 2014 Bee Gum Festival date has arrived this Saturday, October 4. There will be a pancake breakfast, a treasure hunt, various food vendors, arts and crafts and musical entertainment
throughout the day. The festival grounds are located on Hwy 3276 (Stonewall-Frierson Road).

Officials Honor Local Hero for Saving Child from House Fire

At the regular meeting of the Mansfield Board of Aldermen, Michael A. Brown was recognized and presented a certificate for his heroism in saving the life of a child. Keyonta Wyatt, age 4, and his family were at home when their
Mansfield residence caught fire on September 2. The house was a total loss, with the child suffering severe burns from the event. If not for the quick actions of Brown, Keyonta might have fared much worse, and probably would not be here today.

Fire District 8 and “Colors for a Cause” Fundraiser Announced

DeSoto Fire District 8 has been selling t-shirts in support of children’s cancer. This year they are supporting a child and her family with expenses related to trips to and from hospitals for treatments. Jasmine Hogan, age 16, is a student at North DeSoto High School, has been diagnosed with Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The money raised from the sale of the T-shirts will go to Jasmine and her family.

DeSoto Friends of NRA Continue to Seek Sponsors; Announce Individual Ticket Prices

The DeSoto Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) continue to seek sponsors for their second Friends of the NRA Banquet, to be held on Thursday, September 25 at the Dave Means Memorial 4-H Building, located on Hwy 171 between Grand Cane and Mansfield. Doors will open at 6:00 PM, with a catered dinner of fish, shrimp and chicken strips to be served at 7:00 PM

Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne Hosts Town Hall Meeting Regarding Tourism in NW Louisiana

On Tuesday, September 16, tourism directors, officials, media and interested citizens gathered at the newly refurbished Municipal Auditorium with Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, who had partnered with the Shreveport-Bossier  Convention and Tourism Bureau for a town hall meeting. The main purpose was for Dardenne to hear what Northwestern Louisianians considered as their best tourism attractions
