Update: Train Collides with Truck in Longstreet Claiming the Lives of Three

Louisiana State Police spokesman Matt Harris reported that on February 16, at 12:57p.m. Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a crash involving a train and a truck off of Louisiana Highway 5 in DeSoto Parish that claimed the lives of two men and critically injured another. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Dodge Ram was traveling east on a private lease road just east of LA 5 when the driver, 23-year-old John Watson of Centerville, LA, drove into the path of a southbound Union Pacific freight train operated by 59-yearold Kenneth Charles of Humble, TX.

DeSoto Retirement and Rehabilitation Center in Mansfield participated in the Louisiana Auxiliary of “Wives Behind the Badge” event that was held on February 19. The event was so popular within the Mansfield area, Chairman Brooke Lowe stated that the event will take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The auxiliary will have bows, Louisiana Thin Blue Line Decals, shirts and other related merchandise for businesses and organizations wishing to participate.

Angola Warden and LTC Official Speak at DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce

The DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce had a “double header” at their regular meeting on February 17 when Angola Warden Burl Cain and Dr. Rick Bateman Jr., interim chancellor of Bossier Parish Community College now head of area Louisiana Technical Colleges, addressed members and guests. Cain, said to be a candidate for governor of Louisiana in the fall election, and warden of Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola since 1995, is a man who is said to be pursued by lawyers, emphasized “I see what happens with young folks without an education.
