Mansfield Veterans Among Members of “The Greatest Generation” Honored at Luncheon

Members of The Greatest Generation were recently honored at a WWII Luncheon at Hoban Hall at Barksdale Air Force Base. The annual World War II luncheon honored Northwest Louisiana veterans including Raymond Powell, John Blanchard and Billy McElroy.

DeSoto Parish Schools Receive TAP Award of Distinction and $10,000 Prize

Officials from DeSoto Parish Schools were recently surprised with the TAP Award of Distinction. The award honors an organization for its commitment to the implementation of TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement in order to improve educator effectiveness. It was presented at the 15th National TAP Conference in Los Angeles,California, before more than 1,200 educators, policy makers and influential leaders in business and education.

The Eloise Voorhies Gary Memorial Award Fund, a scholarship fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA), is now accepting applications. One award of $500 will be presented to an outstanding student in art education to help pay tuition and/or educational expenses.

Limited Tickets Available for the NWTF Bayou Pierre Chapter Banquet

The Bayou Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Banquet is scheduled for March 20, 2015 at the Dave Means Memorial 4-H Building, 10117 Highway 171 in Grand Cane. Doors will open at 5:30 P.M. and the banquet will start at 7:00 P.M. A dinner catfish and shrimp with all the trimmings will be served.

DPPJ Announces 2015 Parish Road Program

The gavel sounded to close the final meeting of 2014 and DeSoto Police Jurors breathed a sigh of relief. The last meeting of December saw Jurors come together to vote solidly for a 2015 budget that includes a comprehensive Road Repair Program. The 2015 Road Program, as it has been dubbed, will be vastly different from what former programs have been because it relies substantially upon Road Department personnel and equipment.

Recent promotions at Progressive National Bank went to four employees

E. Wayne Davis, CEO and President of Progressive National Bank, along with its Board of Directors. have announced promotions for four of its employees. Lora Evans has been promoted to Senior Vice President, along with Jerri Henderson who has been named Vice President and BSA Officer. Also promoted is Connie Rambin to the position of Vice President and Jackie Miller to Administrative Assistant.

North DeSoto Elementary 3-5 Educator Receives $25,000 Milken Educator Award

Nicknamed the “Oscar of Teaching”, Lindsey Parker of North DeSoto Elementary 3-5 was awarded the Milkin Educator Award for Mentoring Teachers and Students Alike on Friday, February 27. Mrs. Parker got the surprise of her career when she was presented with the prestigious Milken Educator Award—and its accompanying $25,000 cash prize— before a school wide assembly at North DeSoto Elementary 3-5 in Stonewall. Mrs. Parker hones her outstanding instructional skills as a master teacher in TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement, a comprehensive initiative implemented district wide that is focused on increasing educator effectiveness and improving student achievement growth.

Lovie Thomas Hired as Full Time Dispatcher for MPD

At the February 26 Mansfield City Council meeting, Lovie Thomas was unanimously approved to be hired as full time dispatcher for the Mansfield Police Department. Chief Gary Hobbs recommended her to the Council stating she had been working for MPD since September 2014, and had done an excellent job with little or no background in dispatching. Pictured left to right are MPD Chief Gary Hobbs, Officer Lovie Thomas and Mansfield Mayor Curtis McCoy.

A Snow Day in DeSoto Parish
