Raymond Powell Honored for 70 Years of Service with Mt. Vernon Lodge #83

On Tuesday, 04/11/17, Raymond Powell was presented with an appreciation plaque for 70 years of loyal service, hard work, and dedication to the Mount Vernon Lodge # 83 in Logansport. Thomas Houston, Master of the Lodge, made the presentation and said an award for 70 years of service is very rare.

Hometown Boy Realizes Dream as Neil May Named Parkway High Head Football Coach

He never played football as a young boy as did his older brothers. He played a couple of years of tball. That’s it! That’s all! A product of the great “metropolis” of Carmel since the age of twelve, Neil May entered high school in Mansfield and discovered that he might want to play football. To say that he feel in love with this sport is an understatement.

Neil went on to see Mansfield win a State Championship his freshman year there, and saw Evangel Christian Academy win two state championships during his Junior and Senior years.

Jermany Woodley, Sr. Installed as Youngest Member of SU’s MBA National Board of Advisors

On April 7, 2017, Jermany K. Woodley, Sr., at the age of 26, was installed as the youngest member of the Southern University MBA National Board of Advisors. Jermany is a 2009 graduate of Pelican All Saints High School where he was valedictorian of the graduating class. He is the father of Jermany K. Woodley, Jr. and son of Sholanda Woodley Sanders & the late Derrick Hill, grandson of Faye McBride and Lois Hill and greatgrandson of Betty Woodley.

Civil War Trust and Cleco Join with Louisiana to Preserve 14.5 Acres at Historic Mansfield Battlefield

At a news conference on Friday, April 7, Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser joined with the Civil War Trust and Cleco to announce the permanent protection of 14.5 acres at the Mansfield Battlefield in DeSoto Parish. At the Battle of Mansfield, fought April 8, 1864, an outnumbered army of Confederate soldiers from Texas and Louisiana defeated Union troops under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks. The 4,400 casualties convinced Banks he could not wrest Louisiana and Texas from Confederate control.

“Through concerted efforts to protect the state’s battlefields and other historic treasures, this administration and its partners are creating a lasting legacy for present and future Louisianans,” said Lt. Governor Nungesser. “We will continue to work with nonprofit groups like the Civil War Trust and preservation-minded organizations like Cleco to proactively conserve these irreplaceable resources.”

MPD Arrests Mansfield Man for Possession, Flight from Officer and Traffic Violations

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs has reported that on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at approximately at 3:30pm a patrol officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Claudia Street for not having an MVI sticker. When the officer activated his lights the driver sped off and led the officer on a pursuit through the city and ultimately onto Francois Street, where the driver exited the vehicle and fled. The officer pursued the subject on foot and was able to apprehend him in a wooded area adjacent to Louise Street. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a clear plastic bag containing 21 grams of suspected marijuana.

DeSoto Parish School Board Approves Achievement Supplements; Targeted Teacher Pay Raises

At the regular meeting of the DeSoto Parish School Board on April 6, Dr. Cade Brumley, Superintendent, recommended an Achievement Supplement for all employees plus increases to the teacher salary schedule. The proposal won approval by the School Board. The move comes as the district’s seeks to retain its highcaliber workforce while attracting top talent in the region for next school year. Brumley, serving in his fifth year as Superintendent, has annually recommended reduced system-wide expenditures and has repeatedly declined consideration of tax increases.

Civil War Trust and Cleco to Announce Preservation Achievement at Mansfield Battlefield: Lt. Gov. Nungesser to Attend

On Friday, April 7, Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser will join with the Civil War Trust and Cleco energy services to announce the permanent protection of a historic property at the Mansfield Battlefield (Mansfield Historic Site) in DeSoto Parish.

At the Battle of Mansfield, fought April 8, 1864, an army of fewer than 9,000 Confederate soldiers from Texas and Louisiana defeated 13,000 Union troops under Union Gen. Nathaniel Banks. Mansfield was the decisive battle of the Red River Campaign, one of the major campaigns of the American Civil War.

DeSoto Parish School Board Recognizes Retired Teachers

Last week, the DeSoto School System hosted a luncheon to honor retired teachers from throughout the Parish. In all, there were approximately 60 attendees at the event.

DeSoto Chamber Hosts 89th Annual Awards Banquet

On Thursday, March 23 the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce hosted their 89th Annual Awards Banquet. The event was held at the Clista A. Calhoun Center in Mansfield.

The evening began at 6:30 PM with Mansfield Elementary Student Joseph Banner providing special background music during the social and dinner hour. Chamber President Van Reech welcomed members and guests, with City of Mansfield Clerk and Chamber Secretary Marvin Jackson performing an acapella rendition of the National Anthem.

Mansfield and Pleasant Hill to Observe Anniversaries of Historic Battles

The 153rd Anniversary of the battles of the Red River Campaign, which mark the last major engagements of the Union Army’s ill-fated attempt to capture the Confederate stronghold at Shreveport, will be observed at the actual site that the Battle of Pleasant Hill engagement was fought on, on April 8 and 9. Mansfield Historic Site will host observances a week later, with a Bus Tour of the Battle of Pleasant Hill on April 13, and a walking tour of the Mansfield Battlefield on April 15.

In Mansfield, battlefield tours will be conducted at the park, along with lectures on the Battle of Pleasant Hill on Saturday, April 15 at 11:00 AM. There will also be a presentation on the Battle of Pleasant Hill to be held in the Mansfield Theatre at Mansfield Historic Site at 2:00 PM.
