DeSoto Farmers’ Market Begins this Saturday

The DeSoto Farmers’ Market,while providing area growers withan outlet to sell their goods, offersarea residents an opportunity topurchase locally grown orhomemade items. This year’smarket begins Saturday, May 16 andwill continue for ten weeks (with theexception of July 4th) through July18, 2015 from 8 a.m. until 11a.m. Itwill be located north of Mansfieldon the grounds of the Dave B.Means Memorial 4-H Center at10117 Highway 171.

Grand Cane Mayor Proclaims “Rosie Gatlin Day”

Mayor Marsha Richardson and the Village Aldermen proclaimed the 5th day of May as RosieGatlin Day in Grand Cane. Ms. Gatlin is being transferred from the Grand Cane Capital One branchto the branch located in Stonewall, and will be greatly missed by her customers and the community.

Logansport to Host 32nd AnnualRiver City Fest This Weekend

The 32nd Annual River City Festin Logansport is set for this weekend, with this year’s theme selected as “It’s a Southern Thang”.Festival Chairman Karla Smith stated that this year’s theme came toher, and she just went with it. Dates for the 2015 Fest will run May 15,16 and 17. A fireworks show presented by Durr Pyromania will begin at “dark-thirty” Friday night.

Low Turnout of DeSoto Voters Approve Tax Related Proposition

With a low voter turnout of around 1,228 including 192 early votes that were cast, the DeSoto Parish Police Jury received approval for a property tax renewal on Saturday, May 2nd. Jurors declared that the renewal of this proposition was crucial for the day-to-day operations for the parish’s solid waste disposal system to continue unchanged.

First Annual “Balloons Over DeSoto” Event This Weekend at C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport in Grand Cane

Activities continue to be added up until the last minute to DeSoto Parish’s First Annual Balloons Over DeSoto Event to be held on May 8, 9 and 10. DeSoto Parish residents as well as the surrounding area will have the opportunity to be a part of something historic at the first ever hot air balloon show. The event will be filled with family fun for an entire weekend, and is sponsored by the DeSoto Parish Police Jury and DeSoto Parish Tourism Board.

Stanley’s Zach Temple named DeSoto’s 12th Grade Student of the Year

Zachary B. Temple is a senior at Stanley High School. His parents are Brian and Sandra Temple. He has one sister, Hannah Temple. Being a senior who is about to graduate high school has caused him to look back on life and on the things that played a role in impacting his life. Zach states three things that have shaped him: faith, family, and the FFA.

DeSoto Parish Bar Association President Adrienne D. White has announced that their Annual Law Day has been set for Friday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at the DeSoto Parish Courthouse. Speaker for this year’s event will be Christopher A. Cantrell, who is Supervisory Senior Resident Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation-New Orleans Division/Shreveport Resident Agency.

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs reported that a Mansfield High School student was killed in a wreck on Kings Highway Wednesday, April 22 around 3:00 PM. Three others, including the driver, were injured.

DeSoto Relay for Life to be Held This Saturday

On April 25, DeSoto Parish residents and guests from all across our area will join together once again as they raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year’s event will center around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse square from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM. As in years past, vendors will be selling food, various snacks, beverages and related merchandise with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
