Stanley’s Zach Temple named DeSoto’s 12th Grade Student of the Year

Zachary B. Temple is a senior at Stanley High School. His parents are Brian and Sandra Temple. He has one sister, Hannah Temple. Being a senior who is about to graduate high school has caused him to look back on life and on the things that played a role in impacting his life. Zach states three things that have shaped him: faith, family, and the FFA.

DeSoto Parish Annual Law Day This Friday

DeSoto Parish Bar Association President Adrienne D. White has announced that their Annual Law Day has been set for Friday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at the DeSoto Parish Courthouse. Speaker for this year’s event will be Christopher A. Cantrell, who is Supervisory Senior Resident Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation-New Orleans Division/Shreveport Resident Agency.

Mansfield Students Involved in Wreck with One Fatality

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs reported that a Mansfield High School student was killed in a wreck on Kings Highway Wednesday, April 22 around 3:00 PM. Three others, including the driver, were injured.

DeSoto Relay for Life to be Held This Saturday

On April 25, DeSoto Parish residents and guests from all across our area will join together once again as they raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year’s event will center around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse square from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM. As in years past, vendors will be selling food, various snacks, beverages and related merchandise with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

DeSoto Parish Leads State in Graduation Rates

With the latest wave of graduation rates being released, residents of DeSoto Parish have reason to smile. According to the Louisiana Department of Education, the DeSoto Parish School System now has the highest graduation rate in the State of Louisiana at 94.5 percent.

DeSoto Art Council Announces “Art Rocks- 2015!” Fest Set for May 2

The DeSoto Art Council is making final plans for the Seventh Annual “Art Rocks!” festival to be held on Saturday, May 2, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Cosponsors for the event are the Grand Cane Historical Association and the DeSoto Parish Tourist Bureau. The fest is a celebration of the arts, including artist and artisan vendors.

Stonewall Mayor and Council Battle Alcohol Sales in Close Proximity to School

Last week Stonewall Mayor Charles Waldon and the town council were informed of the intent by the KDJ Corporation to open a package liquor store on Hwy 171 in Stonewall. The location of the proposed store is to be on the corner of Collinswood Drive and Hwy 171. While being close to schools, churches and the newly opened Sonic Drive-In, they are within legal limits of the distances that are required to sel alcoholic beverages.

DPSB and COE ReceivePartnership Grant toRecruit and Train Teachers

Northwestern State University’s Gallaspy College of Education(COE) and Human Development, inpartnership with the DeSoto ParishSchool Board, is a recipient of a Believe and Prepare Grant issued by the Louisiana Department of Education that will provide funds torecruit, select, prepare and supportnew teachers for DeSoto Parish.Grant funding will run from May2015 through June 2016.

Jessica has recently begunradiation and chemotherapy tobattle the disease. A $7.00 donationwill purchase you a plate ofspaghetti, green beans, roll and adessert.
