Deja Vu? The Logansport Tigers are Class A State Champions – 2016!

On December 9, 1995 the Logansport Tigers took on the Mangham Dragons in the Class A State Championship Game. On that day 21 years ago, the Tigers fell behind to the Dragons 24-7 in the first half. The Tigers made a once in a lifetime comeback behind 4 touchdown passes from Kevin Magee to Robert Davis to earn the come from behind 33-32 win. The Tigers were held to 81 yards in the first half and gained 279 in the second half. Flash forward to December 9, 2016, the Tigers made a return trip to New Orleans for a second attempt at winning the Class A State Championship. Standing in the way was the 17 time State Champion Haynesville Tornado. Haynesville was making their 5th consecutive appearance.

Keatchi Heritage Foundation Annual Christmas Musicale Event December 18th

Back by popular demand, The Keachi Heritage Foundation, Inc. is proudly hosting a Christmas Musicale, entitled “A Classical Christmas Evening”. According to Keachi Mayor Travis Whitfield, the event is slated for Sunday, December 18 at 6:00 PM at the Keachi Presbyterian Church, located on Hwy 5. Featured entertainment for the evening will be Dr. Leonard Kacenjar and the Shreveport Festival Strings Quartet. These musicians come from all over the area, but are based out of Shreveport.

Second Mansfield Woman Found Deceased in Residence

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs has reported that on Tuesday, November 29 at approximately 6:30 PM, MPD received a call to the 500 block of Kennedy Street in regards to an unresponsive female inside a residence. Officers responded to the location and discovered the body of a 27-year-old female, identified as Laporsha Pitts, in the living room of the residence.

City of Mansfield Christmas Parade Set to Roll this Saturday

Santa’s Elves and the Mansfield Alive Committee have been hard at work with planning and decorating for the 2016 City of Mansfield Christmas Parade. The annual event will be held on second Saturday of December, which falls on December 10, beginning at 2:00 PM. Organizers invite you to come celebrate the Season with them, with the annual event even bigger and better than last year. This year, the Parade entry applications are $30.00 each with the vendor applications’ fee also set for $30.00. Entries will include floats, performing and marching units (under 10 years of age), performing and marching units (ages 11 years and up), bands, decorated vehicles and Santa Claus himself. Trophies will be awarded for First and Second places in each category.

Tigers Headed to Semifinals After 50-14 Win Over Varnado

The Logansport Tigers are headed to the Class A semifinals after a 50-14 win over the Varnado Wildcats. This will be the first trip to the semifinals since 1997 when current Tiger Head Coach Kevin Magee was a senior quarterback. Logansport will play host to the defending Class A champions Kentwood Kangaroos. The Tigers will bring a 12-0 record into the game while Kentwood is 9-4. This will be the first semifinal game to be held in Logansport since they fell 12-10 to West St. John in 1993. Game time is 7:00 Friday.

Grand Cane’s Annual Pioneer Christmas Parade Set to Roll December 3

The Village of Grand Cane will hold their annual Christmas parade and festival on Saturday, December 3 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM, with vendors ready to tempt you with food items, arts and crafts as well as the Village’s restaurants that will be open and ready to serve you their specialties. The parade is scheduled at 11:00 AM and will run through the downtown area. This year’s Parade Grand Marshal is Nita Richardson.

Early Voting Dates to Begin Saturday, November 26

Early voting for the December 10, 2016 election will begin on November 26 and continue through December 3, at the DeSoto Registrar of Voters Office with the exception of Sunday, November 27. You will need to bring your driver’s license or a generally recognized photo ID. Hours are 8:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Also, the deadline to request a mail ballot is December 6. The DeSoto Parish Registrar of Voters is located at 105 Franklin Street in Mansfield.

You do not need an official reason to vote early. All registered voters may vote early, just as if they were voting on Election Day. However, in Louisiana you must have a reason to be eligible to vote by mail, unless you are a military or overseas citizens.

DeSoto School District Earns “A” Ranking – First Time for Parish

For the first time in history, the DeSoto Parish School System has been named an “A” rated school system by the Louisiana Department of Education. The new District Performance Score is 101.9 – an increase of 12.9 points from last year.

The District is now ranked 14 out of 72 Louisiana districts for academic performance. In 2010, DeSoto was ranked 45. Only 16 districts in the State of Louisiana hold the rating of “A”.
