DeSoto Chamber Honors “At Wits End” with Ribbon Cutting

Officers and members of the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce gather on Tuesday, October 25 for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony for “At Wit’s End”. The shop is owned by Edna Wheless in lovely, historic Grand Cane. Mrs. Wheless made the decision to open the shop, which carries little  gifts, cards and antiques, in Grand Cane because she felt the need to offer shoppers something in the Village that would keep them from driving to Shreveport.

National, State and Local Candidates and Louisiana Amendment Proposals Await Voters’ Decisions on November 8

On Election Day this November 8, voters will be considering their choices for officials at Local, State and National levels. According to where you live in DeSoto Parish, many will be deciding on Town Councilmen, Mayors, a Justice of the Peace and Judge for the 42nd Judicial Court. On a larger scale, DeSoto Parish citizens will join multi-parish voters to decide our U.S. Representative-4th Congressional District and Louisiana Senator. Voters will also be a part of history as they elect the 45th President of the United States. Across the state, Louisiana voters will decide on six proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution. These proposals were approved by Legislators, with each bill receiving at least a two- thirds vote in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. The governor cannot veto proposals for constitutional amendments.

Logansport Holds DeSoto Mayors’ Quarterly Meeting

On October 17, it was Logansport Mayor Katherine Freeman’s turn to host the DeSoto Parish Mayors’ Quarterly Meeting. At each of these meetings the mayors, councilmen and clerks share information regarding their communities, the parish, state and economic development for the area.

DeSoto Chamber of Commerce Hosts Judge Candidates Forum

At the October 18 meeting of the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce, candidates for 42nd Judicial Court-District A were invited to speak to the members and guests present. The four candidates drew numbers to determine the speaking order, which resulted in John Evans speaking first, followed by Adrienne White, Amy Burford McCartney and Brenda Ford. Each introduced themselves and gave a synopsis of their family history, education, work history and why they felt they were the best candidate to fill the position of Judge for the remainder of Robert Burgess’ term.

Six Proposed Amendments to Louisiana’s Constitution; What Do They Mean?

Louisiana voters will be asked to decide on six proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution on the November 8 ballot. This guide to the 2016 Constitutional Amendments is to help provide a brief review of each item in the order they will appear on the ballot. These proposals were approved by legislators during the 2015-16 regular sessions. As required for passage of constitutional amendments, each bill received at least a two-thirds vote in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. The governor cannot veto proposals for constitutional amendments.

North DeSoto High School Named Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

For the first time in the history of the district, a DeSoto Parish school  has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The United States Department of Education has selected North DeSoto High School in Stonewall for this prestigious honor. Blue Ribbon Schools are considered as some of the nation’s most elite educational institutions.

Logansport Chamber of Commerce Honors First Responders

After the historic floods of 2016, it seemed most fitting that theLogansport Chamber of Commerce chose to pay tribute to our First  Responders at their 3rd Annual Banquet. Two hundred citizens of Logansport, Joaquin, and DeSoto Parish gathered Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Logansport High School Auditorium to join the Chamber in honoring our Law Enforcement Officers, our Emergency Medical Technicians, and our Fire Fighters.
