Mansfield Council Approves New Full Time Hires

C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport to Acquire New Fueling System

Jackie McKinney, Interim Manager of the C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport, has announced that they will be receiving a new fueling system. Construction is set to begin March 2019, and is expected to be completed in around three weeks.

Alpaugh Supply, LLC of New Orleans will furnish a 12,000 gallon double wall jet fuel storage tank and a 12,000 gallon double wall Av-gas fuel storage tank. The tanks will meet UL2085 standards, have a white internal 2 part epoxy coating, and a corboline exterior coating. The tanks will also have an internal ladder, external ladder and platform attached.

McKinney said that the tanks would be constructed off of the airport property and then delivered upon their completion.

Convicted Murderer Brian Horn Still in Need of Council for New Trial

After a court hearing consisting of a few hours, convicted murderer Brian Horn is still without representation for the new trial he will receive due to the Louisiana Supreme overturning his conviction and sentence. Convicted of the murder of 12-year-old Justin Bloxom in 2014, Horn was sentenced to death. Due to a precedent set by another Louisiana case, Horn and another defendant contested that their lawyers admitted their guilt believing this strategy would help them avoid the death penalty. Both defendants claim that this was against their wishes.

Horn returned to the DeSoto Parish Courtroom in December, when it was determined by Judge Amy Burford McCartney that she wasn’t prepared to select any attorney due to the Louisiana Public Defenders’ Board not providing a complete list of attorneys certified to handle capital punishment cases.

School Board Elects New Officers and Finance Committee Members

On January 8, the DeSoto Parish School Board members were sworn-in prior to their regularly scheduled meeting. Judge Amy Burford McCartney administered the Oath of Office to the eleven current representatives.

The election of this year’s DPSB president was the fourth item on the agenda, with outgoing President Dudley Glenn presiding over the meeting until the election was complete. Bobby Boyd, representative for District 10, was unanimously elected as President and was handed the gavel to begin his term, The next order of business was to elect a Vice President, with Dale “Coach” Morvan of District 7, also receiving a unanimous vote by his peers.

15th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Breakfast to be Held January 21st

Committed, Active and Dedicated (CAD) Women will host Mansfield’s 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Breakfast on Monday, January 21, with doors opening at 7:30 AM. The event will once again be held at Mansfield Elementary-Middle School’s Multipurpose room, which is located at 1915 McArthur Drive.

The five keynote speakers for this year’s event will speak on the topics of reconciliation, mercy, compassion, freedom and justice, with each having an allotted time frame to speak from twelve to fifteen minutes. This year’s hosts are the Gentlemen’s Club, under the leadership of Kervin Campbell. The Mansfield Elementary School Choir, under the direction of Sybil White, will be providing musical entertainment.

Highway 5 Shoulder Repairs Cease Due to Inclement Weather Conditions

It seems that the shoulder repair project on Highway 5 that starts in Logansport and proceeds for the next 6 miles (ending at Thomas Road) is on hold until the weather improves and the ground dries out a bit.

According to Louisiana DOTD District Engineer Administrator David North, the work first became delayed due to the holiday season, and then because of all of the rain in our area.

North said, “Holidays and weather are the primary holdups. The ground is saturated and that condition is continuing to worsen. Once the sun begins to shine and things dry up, there is no way of telling when the work can resume.”

Campbell Applauds Internet Expansion Throughout North Louisiana

More than 54,000 rural homes and businesses in North Louisiana will gain access to high-speed Internet service thanks to $22 million in federal funding, according to Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell.

The “Connect America” program of the Federal Communications Commission is helping fiber, wireless and Internet providers meet the need for broadband service in unserved or underserved area of North Louisiana.

“This is good news for the people and business owners in my district,” Campbell said. “Fast and reliable internet service is critical to health care, education, commerce and public safety, as well as home entertainment.”

DPPJ Extends Contract of Animal Shelter Director for 90 Days

On September 17, 2018, Connie Philipp began working for DeSoto Parish Animal Services at the T. B. Yopp, Jr. Facility located at 202 Liberty Drive in Grand Cane. At the regular meeting of the DeSoto Parish Police Jury Philipp was offered a 90 day extension of her contract as Director, which was unanimously approved by the Jury and accepted by Philipp.

Although she’s only been there a brief time, she has been in this area for a while longer. She resided in Grand Cane and now Marshall, Texas with her husband, horses and dogs on a 10 acre ranch.

Happy New Year Traditions Celebrated and Remembered

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon, after the Vernal Equinox, which is the first day of spring. Traditions of the season include the making of New Year’s resolutions that also dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions might include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.
