For the twelfth year in a row and during an especially urgent time of need, SONIC® Drive-In donated an all-time high of $1.3 million to fund public school teacher requests across the country as part of its annual Limeades for Learning Fall Voting Campaign. In partnership with nonprofit teacher crowdfunding platform, DonorsChoose and with the help of SONIC fans, a teacher from Logansport, Louisiana was among the community heroes up-voted to receive $600 for essential materials to create an engaging learning environment.

On December 16, Logansport football standout Key’Selvian Barnes signed a Letter of Intent with University of Louisiana-Lafayette for a full 5 year scholarship. Barnes will be exchanging jerseys from a purple and gold Tiger to that of the red and white Ragin’ Cajuns.

Coach Kevin Magee said, “UL is getting a steal with Key’Selvian. He is a great young man that has a positive attitude, and always wears a smile on his face. He stays focused on the job at hand whether it is on the football field, in the classroom, or whatever he is working on at the moment. He will give them his best efforts, just like he’s done for our team. “

On December 16, DeSoto Regional Health Systems received their allotted dosages of the COVID-19 vaccine that was distributed throughout Louisiana by Morris and Dickson of Shreveport. CEO Todd Eppler reported that they were given 50 doses for this first round of the Pfizer vaccine.

The first doses were to be given to front line workers in the medical and health industry, with Eppler, Dr. Doug Sawyer, and a few staff nurses giving their okay to proceed with the vaccine. Eppler said that some of his employees plan to take the vaccine but wanted to wait until after the Christmas holidays as a side effect precaution. As of day two of Eppler’s inoculation, he was having no side effects accept for the shot site in his arm being sore, just like any other shot procedure.

Mansfield Main and the Logansport, Stonewall, and Pelican Branches of the DeSoto Parish Library have announced the dates of their annual Open Houses. Logansport’s will consist of several days, running from December 7 through 11 with the Pelican Branch’s slated on Thursday, December 10 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Stonewall will host their Open House on Thursday, December 10 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with Mansfield Main winding up the festivities with their Open House held on Wednesday, December 16 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) today announced President Trump has signed H.R. 5384, legislation to rename the Mansfield post office after civil rights leader and former Louisiana legislator Dr. C.O. Simpkins, Senior, into law.
