More than 54,000 rural homes and businesses in North Louisiana will gain access to high-speed Internet service thanks to $22 million in federal funding, according to Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell.

The “Connect America” program of the Federal Communications Commission is helping fiber, wireless and Internet providers meet the need for broadband service in unserved or underserved area of North Louisiana.

“This is good news for the people and business owners in my district,” Campbell said. “Fast and reliable internet service is critical to health care, education, commerce and public safety, as well as home entertainment.”

On September 17, 2018, Connie Philipp began working for DeSoto Parish Animal Services at the T. B. Yopp, Jr. Facility located at 202 Liberty Drive in Grand Cane. At the regular meeting of the DeSoto Parish Police Jury Philipp was offered a 90 day extension of her contract as Director, which was unanimously approved by the Jury and accepted by Philipp.

Although she’s only been there a brief time, she has been in this area for a while longer. She resided in Grand Cane and now Marshall, Texas with her husband, horses and dogs on a 10 acre ranch.

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon, after the Vernal Equinox, which is the first day of spring. Traditions of the season include the making of New Year’s resolutions that also dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions might include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

Sheriff Jayson Richardson would like to announce the recent promotions that have taken place within the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Ray Sharrow, who was most recently over the Narcotics Division, has been promoted to Chief Criminal Deputy. Sharrow first began his law enforcement career with the Mansfield Police Department under Chief Don English. He worked there for about a year before moving to the DPSO under Sheriff Hugh Bennett, serving as a Corrections Officer. He soon was moved to be a Patrol Officer and became the Canine Handler with the first dual purpose K-9 officer (dog). Sharrow stated that he loved his K-9 and that was probably his favorite position he had held at DPSO. He was then promoted to Sergeant over the Narcotics Division and then advanced up the ranks to Lieutenant and finally Captain. In total, Sharrow has served the citizens of DeSoto Parish for over 23 years. He is married and the father of four children.

On December 18, members from DeSoto Fire District 1 out of the Logansport area, Fire District 3 out of the Stonewall area, Fire District 5 out of the Stanley area, Fire District 8 out of the Mansfield area, DeSoto EMS and the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office banded together to help make Christmas a little brighter for DeSoto Parish children as well as the children of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Shreveport.

Santa arrived to complete the afternoon of fun, and distributed gifts that were collected by the entities through generous donations of toys and monetary donations to make purchases. Any of us that have been in the hospital know how long the days can be during the allotted time you have to be there. Now imagine being a child confined in a hospital during Christmas, with some even being far from their homes.
