DeSoto Fire District 1 Celebrates with Awards Banquet

The DeSoto Fire District 1 held their annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, March 23.

Firefighters and their guests, along with local officials, visited and took souvenir photos during the social period until it was time to be seated.

DFD 1 Chief Rusty Canton welcomed firefighters and guest, and then called on FDF 1 Chaplain Rev. Timothy Roberson for the Invocation. A steak dinner with all the trimmings was served buffet style.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Shreveport Fire Department Captain Dennis Arron, who is now retired. He was Chief Canton’s last training Captain that he served under as a probationary firefighter. Arron now teaches rodeo and speaks at Cowboy Churches all over the United States.

DPPJ Recognizes State Championship Lady Wolverines and Employees

The DeSoto Parish Police Jury recognized several employees with service awards in addition to the Mansfield Lady Wolverine Basketball team at their regular March meeting.

Presentation of Achievements and Service Awards were given to Roderick Gillam for 5 years, Jessica Hatcher for 10 years, and Gus Simpson for 10 years of employment with the Jury. Juror Rodriguez Ross (District 6) presented all three awards.

Blue Sworn-In as Mansfield’s First Black Female Police Chief

At the regular meeting of the Mansfield City Council, Annette Blue made history as she took the Oath of Office as Mansfield’s first black female Police Chief. Sgt. Billy Locke moved up to Blue’s former position and will now serve as Assistant Police Chief. A standing room only crowd of co-workers, officials, family and friends packed the meeting room to witness the event.

Chief Blue began her employment with the Mansfield Police Department in October 1985. The 28-yearold came on board as a parttime dispatcher, never knowing what lay ahead in her future in law enforcement. She was promoted to full time dispatcher in February 1986.

DPSO Responds to Body Located off Asseff Road

For the second time in a little over a week, the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to yet another call reporting a body. This newest body was found off of Asseff Road near I-49.

Sheriff Jayson Richardson reported that about 3:30 p.m. on March 12, DPSO received a call from a concerned citizen that had located what appeared to be a body of a white male. Investigators later stated that the victim had been shot and wrapped in plastic.

Once the family was notified, the body was identified as 30-year-old Morgan Christopher Caver of Dallas, Texas. He had last been seen in Wills Point, Texas and a joint investigation between DeSoto Parish and Texas authorities is currently on going.

The burned body that was discovered on March 9 in Frierson also has been identified as a 25-year-old black male named Tony Hol from Shreveport. His family had reported him as missing on February 21.

Sheriff Richardson Reports Burned Body Found in Frierson Area; Possible Homicide

Sheriff Jayson Richardson has reported of a possible homicide in DeSoto Parish.

On March 9, area workers contacted the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office after finding burned remains in a wooded area on a well site just off of White Springs Road the in Frierson area.

Upon arrival, Deputies contacted the DeSoto Parish Coroner’s Office, who identified the remains as human, appearing to be male. The body is estimated to have been there for 2 to 3 weeks.

Investigators responded to the scene and secured evidence related to the investigation. There was no vehicle or clothing found in the area.

A positive identification will be made by the Coroner’s Office, and the investigation is on going at this time. Further information will be released at a later time.

DeSoto Regional Health System Annual Meeting

Todd Eppler welcomed an overflowing crowd to the DeSoto Hospital Association annual meeting on Tuesday, February 26. This meeting of the ownership group of the health system offers Eppler an opportunity to give his annual “State of the Health System” address.

The meeting was kicked off by the Chairman of the Board, John Freeman . He welcomed the association members and praised the leadership team for the great job they have done in the past year. He then turned the meeting over to Eppler.

Eppler acknowledged the DRHS Board of Directors, the DRHS Foundation Board and the Senior Management team. He welcomed the 17 new nominees as members to the DeSoto Hospital Association after their approval, which was unanimous.

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs Retires from office

At a private event held at the Clista A. Calhoun Center, Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs was honored with a retirement party by Mayor John Mayweather, the Mansfield City Council, and the Mansfield Police Department. Guests enjoyed hearing speakers tell of various accomplishments and stories of Hobb’s 30 year career with the MPD.

A buffet of fried catfish with all the trimmings was prepared by various members of the Mansfield Police Department, who also helped serve the guests.

It was a bittersweet farewell to one of Mansfield’s most beloved Chiefs of Police, who was always a friend to all. We wish him well in his retirement years with his wife, Jennifer and son, Silas.

School Board Presents Awards to Educators, Students and Athletes at March Meeting

The DeSoto Parish School Board met on March 7 with the majority of the meeting centering around awards and proclamation presentations. Pictures were being taken all over the room to remember this wonderful occasion.

First recognized was North DeSoto High School athlete Josh Sarpy, who was awarded a certificate for winning the LHSAA State Wrestling Championship.

This recognition was followed by that of the Students of the Year, Teachers of the Year, and Principal of the Year.

The Lady Wolverines were the next group honored and were presented a resolution recognizing them as Class 2A State Champions.

NWTF Bayou Pierre Banquet Saturday

On Saturday, March 9 make plans to join the members of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) as they host their 20th Annual banquet, with doors opening at 5:30 PM and dinner starting at 7:00 PM. Each year, thousands of NWTF members and volunteers flock to banquet halls and civic centers across North America to share stories, a meal and common goals – conserving wildlife and protecting our hunting heritage, with area residents doing their part here in DeSoto Parish.

Ticket prices and sponsor fees for this year’s banquet include Individual Ticket Membership at $55.00, with tickets for individual and spouse costing $75.00. This includes admission to the banquet and meal. JAKES Membership (17 and under) ticket is $20.00 and includes JAKES membership, life and admission to banquet and meal.
