DeSoto, it’s been an amazing ride! As of last week, Hunter Mannies, has stepped down and resigned as Captain and President of the Board of the Krewe of Demeter.

Three, almost four, years ago Mannies took the reigns of the Krewe with a vision and honestly little else. Demeter was lacking in number and support. In just over three years it has grown into one of the larger Krewes in the Northwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. Demeter has quadrupled their numbers and their presence in the parish and Northwest Louisiana.

Frierson Fire District 9 Ladies Auxiliary will host a Community Political Forum on Saturday, March 6 with a Meet and Greet at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Frierson Baptist Church, located at 299 East Street in Frierson. The Forum will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The invited speakers include Candidates for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) – District 4, with the election to fill the seat vacated by the resignation by former member Tony Davis. The field of contenders includes Shelly McFarland of Winnfield, Michael Melerine of Shreveport, John Milkovich of Shreveport, Cody Whitaker of Winnfield, and Cassie Williams of Bossier City.

Governor John Bel Edwards is asking President Joseph R. Biden to declare a major disaster for Louisiana due to the recent severe winter weather event. A system of heavy rains, wintry precipitation, and freezing temperatures began moving across Louisiana on February 11, 2021, and a second, similar system, followed on February 17, 2021. The impacts of the wintry precipitation and low temperatures, some of the lowest ever recorded in the region, posed a serious threat to the lives and property of the people of Louisiana. The freezing temperatures resulted in outages to nearly 100 water systems, impacting roughly one-quarter of the Louisiana population. Also, more than 200-thousand people suffered power outages. The state was forced to close roads across the in each region, limiting travel for business and limiting some of the initial emergency response due to the dangerous conditions.

On February 24, DeSoto Sheriff Jayson Richardson, DeSoto Detention Center Warden Billy Cotton, and Chief Criminal Deputy Raymond Sharrow, and Chief Civil Deputy Monica Cason, took a moment to honor and appreciate someone who has spent countless hours keeping both their staff and DDC inmates healthy.

Deputy Vanessa Youngblood has served as Nurse in the DeSoto Detention Center for the past four years. She has always been an exemplary employee, however the past year of COVID-19 has presented it’s own new challenges in the field of health. Deputy Youngblood has performed countless COVID-19 tests to inmates and first responders, many times going over and beyond her call of duty to ensure the safety and well-being of those around her, sacrificially, without complaint.

The March 20, 2021 ballot will be limited to two items including two special elections for the replacement of State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) Board Member for District 4 and DeSoto Policy Juryman for District 2. All registered voters are eligible to vote for the BESE Board member, with only those residing in District 2 voting for DPPJ replacement. Early Voting will begin on March 6 through 13, with the exception of March 7, which is a Sunday.

The BESE Board election is necessary due to the resignation of District 4’s board member, Tony Davis, of Natchitoches. Those qualifying as his replacement are candidates Shelly McFarland-R, Michael Melerine-R, John Milkovich-I, Cody Whitaker-NP, and Cassie Williams-D.

On February 18, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that beginning Monday, February 22, an additional group of Louisianans – K-12 teachers, school support staff, day care staff, those who are pregnant and Louisianans aged 55 to 64 with certain health conditions – are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. This group represents around 475,000 Louisianans and will bring the total population eligible in Louisiana to nearly 1.65 million people. Louisiana is currently vaccinating people in Priority Group 1B-Tier One.

Louisiana’s COVID vaccination strategy relies on making vaccine doses available across the state through community clinics, pharmacies, hospitals and other health care providers. So far 812,962 total vaccine doses have been administered in Louisiana, with 271,216 Louisianans receiving both doses.

The Lady Wolverines paused in between games to honor their senior players Meliyah Canada and Jada Burrell and celebrate their title as District Champs. 

The Wolverines honored their four seniors players Trenton Colbert, Adrian Green, JaKorrien Green, and Kiondric Woodley.

It’s not a real simple answer, but I will try and do my best to explain using our system as an example. Other systems are smaller or larger, but the percentages will remain about the same. So, we have 2,400 customers and produce 700 gallons of water per minute (GPM). Our normal usage is 400 gallons per minute (GPM). This gives us plenty of room for maintenance and other times that the plant cannot run, so we have enough reserve capacity.

Nonprofit to Provide High-Quality Early Childhood Education in Greater DeSoto and Beyond with State-of-the-Art Facilities

Save the Children, which has operated Head Start and Early Head Start programs for almost a decade in rural communities across America, is strengthening its investment in high-quality early education opportunities in northwest Louisiana. The nonprofit recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art Head Start center in Mansfield earlier this month, and a new center in Natchitoches will open later this year, supporting children in Natchitoches, Desoto and Red River Parishes.

Gov. John Bel Edwards on Wednesday, February 10, signed a proclamation extending Louisiana’s modified Phase 2 guidelines, which include sensible restrictions meant to slow the spread of COVID-19 like a statewide mask mandate, for another 21 days. The new order is set to expire on March 3, 2021.

Hospitalizations and test positivity have improved in Louisiana, but cases are still very high and more people are in the hospital today than were last summer. January was the second deadliest month of the pandemic in Louisiana and, with Mardi Gras next week, Louisiana cannot afford to relax restrictions. Last year, before public health officials were warning against cancelling large events, COVID-19 was spread during Mardi Gras celebrations, leading to many cases and deaths in the New Orleans region.
