Mansfield Council Sets New Public Comments Policy

To keep business more aligned in a professional manner, the Mansfield Board of Aldermen adopted a Public Comments Policy at their regular meeting that was held on February 25.

In accordance with LA R. S. 42:14 (D), the City of Mansfield will allow an opportunity for public comments at each City Council meeting at a point at the beginning of each meeting prior to action on an agenda item upon which a vote is to be taken.

Any individual interested in addressing the City Council must register in writing with the City Clerk. Registration may be handled in advance by calling the City Clerk at 318-872-0406 or by faxing 318-872-0402. Registration may also occur onsite on meeting days.

At the time of registration, individuals must identify themselves, the topic on which they will comment, and the entity they represent, if applicable.

Lady Wolverines Win State Championship

After coming close to winning a state title three other times, Mansfield finally has an LHSAA title to claim.

The Lady Wolverines defeated District 1-2A rival North Caddo, 42-34, in the Class 2A championship game Saturday at Rapides Coliseum.

“You know, I think three is a charm,” Mansfield coach Kendra Jones said. “I’ve been in the finals twice and I said we’ve got to win this this year. The kids were excited, and I think we brought most of the town of Mansfield here. It’s just great for the kids, the parents and the community.”

Lady Wolverine junior guard Sha’Kahia Warmsley won MVP honors after playing all 32 minutes and scoring a game-high 17 points. She also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Mansfield (31-3) also got great input from Taylor DeWitt, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

DeSoto Representatives Participate in No Man’s Land’s 200th Birthday Celebration

On Friday, February 22, members from the DeSoto Parish Tourism Commission and various interested citizens attended the inaugural event for the Bicentennial Celebration of No Man’s Land at Fort Jesup State Historical Site. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser joined other dignitaries and political figures from around the state to share in the day’s festivities. The event included living history demonstrations, cast iron cooking, music, and children’s activities that reflected the legends and customs of this area, as Louisiana’s Final Frontier’s culture was celebrated. The event lasted both Friday and Saturday, open to the public with free admission.

DeSoto Chamber of Commerce Honors Elsa Mims

Mansfield business woman Elsa Mims was honored at the regular meeting of the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce. Mims, owner of Pattison’s Fashions in Mansfield has decided to retire and close the doors of the 44 year old establishment. President Blaine Hodges presented a plaque of appreciation from the Chamber thanking her for adding so much to the business community in Mansfield and DeSoto Parish.

Mims made the difficult decision to close the legendary boutique in the fall of 2018, and began an unprecedented “going out of business sale” to aptly celebrate her store’s many years of devoted service to Mansfield and to her customers.

Sheriff Announces Retirement of Deputy Deborah Foshee

Sheriff Jayson Richardson presented Foshee with a commemorative watch in appreciation of her 15 years of faithful service. Pictured (l-r) are Deborah’s supervisor, Asst. Local Law Enforcement Apprehends Suspects After Local Jewelry Theft

Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs has reported that on Friday, February 15, a theft was reported around 4:20 p.m. by Smith’s Jewelry in Mansfield.

Upon arrival at the 810 Polk Street business, Officers discovered that a black female had entered the business and grabbed a ring valued at $10,000 and ran from the business. The business owner was able to give a description of the vehicle as well as the suspect.

Parish Achieves Certification as ACT Work Ready Community

DeSoto Parish and North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) recently jointly announce that DeSoto Parish has met all criteria to become a certified ACT Work Ready Community. This achievement caps a 14-month engagement process and begins a two-year growth and maintenance phase to retain certification.

The ACT Work Ready Communities initiative is designed to assist a particular area, region or state in developing its workforce pipeline to provide skilled workers for employers. The framework allows each participating community to quantify and improve the skill levels of its workforce through a standardized workforce skill credential—the ACT WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate™—supported by data updated online by Iowabased ACT on a monthly basis.

Riders Prepare for 64th Old Spanish Trail Ride Trek

On Saturday, February 16, riders will ride through Logansport for the 64th Annual Old Spanish Trail Ride, with participants departing for a 216-mile trip to Houston, as they travel down Texas Hwy 59. The trip is scheduled to last seven days, with the “all the way” riders arriving in time to participate in the Houston Fat Stock Show (HFSS) Parade, which also hosts rodeo events, concerts and auctions. The ride is held in conjunction with the HFSS to help with its promotion. The riders are due to arrive in Houston on February 23, after a week long journey. Seven stops along the way include Timpson, Nacogdoches, Diboll, Livingston, Cleveland and Humble, before reaching the final destination of the Houston Fat Stock Show.

Riders have only been able not to begin their lengthy trip from Logansport a few times, and that was due to construction. They are excited to be able to pass through Logansport, Haslam and Joaquin as they relive history traveling the Old Spanish Trail.

LHS Tigers Celebrate Signing of College Letters of Intent

Logansport High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Kevin Magee proudly announced that three of his Tigers signed Letters of Intent with three different colleges on February 7. Landon Moon will play for the Southwestern Assembly of God University blue and gold Lions of Judah in Dallas, with Madrid Johnson signing with Northwestern State University becoming a purple and white Demon.

Mardi Gras Parades Set to Roll this Weekend in DeSoto

The months of January and February have been full of parties, appearances and Bals

with both the Krewe of Demeter and Krewe of Aquarius being in the forefront of carnival season’s fun and frolic. This weekend, both Krewes will host parades bringing crowds to our area ready for family fun as they try to catch as many beads, cups and treasured throws that the float riders are willing to part with.

On Saturday, February 16, Logansport’s Krewe of Aquarius will host their 15th Annual Mardi Gras parade, with this year’s theme carried out with “Dancing Through the Decades”. The parade will lineup for judging at Logansport High School at 4:00 p.m., and the parade will begin at 6:00 p.m.
