Early Voting Begins Nov. 2 Through Nov. 9 for Runoffs

Early voting for the Gubernatorial Election Runoff on November 16 will begin Saturday, November 2 and continue through November 9, except for Sunday, November 10. The locations for early voting will remain the same as it was in October; the old Registrar of Voters Office, located at 105 Franklin Street and at the DeSoto Parish Library Main Office, located at 109 Crosby Street, both in Mansfield. Although the new Registrar of Voters Office is now open and in full operation, state regulations mandate that the Early Voting process be held at the same location throughout this particular election.

Multiple Ribbon Cuttings in Stonewall Welcome New Businesses

Members of the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, October 17 for Fearless Warrior Mixed Martial Arts and Self Defense, Renee’s Dance Studio and Elite Cheer-Nastics. All three of these new businesses are located at 1493 Hwy 171 in Stonewall.

Fearless Warrior Mixed Martial Arts and Self Defense is owned by Brock and Danielle Pearah. Brock, who is the main instructor, was born in Baton Rouge and moved to DeSoto Parish at a young age. He attended Central School Corporation and Mansfield High School. Upon high school graduation, he attended Northwestern State University before moving back to Baton Rouge, where he soon discovered his passion for Mixed Martial Arts.

His training was one of the best in the area with Donald Mayeaux also known as “Don the Python”. There, Brock learned his unique fighting style and techniques that set him apart from the rest.

Mansfield High School Announces Homecoming Court and Homecoming Celebration Activities

The student body of Mansfield High School has selected the following young ladies as their representatives on the 2019 Homecoming Court: Freshmen Maids – LaTykeyunna Sicks and Xaria Turner; Sophomore Maids – Ayana Knuckles and Sha’Korryah Wyatt; Junior Maids – Kennedy Booker, T’Mia Handy, Sha’Kenedi Hensley, and Alicia Williams; Senior Maids – LaStylar Gilbert, Talaya Jones, Arianna Lewis, Cherish Ross, Kalis Sims, and Kaliyah Wilson.

The identity of the Football Sweetheart and Homecoming Queen will be kept secret until the Homecoming Game Presentation on Friday Night, November 1st.

Homecoming Week will take place Monday, Oct. 28th through Friday, Nov. 1st. The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Knock Out The Knights.”

Former Mansfield Fire Chief Wayne Nichols received his last call on Tuesday, October 15 in Shreveport. Chief Nichols had been a dedicated firefighter for over thirty years with various fire departments in the area. He loved Christ, his church, his family, and serving others. He shared his love of God with everyone, and his grandchildren and “fur babies” were each special to him, and the loves of his life.

Local Technical College is Now a Community College

Chancellor Earl Meador of the newly renamed Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) and members of the Mansfield and DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce celebrated with him at a ribbon cutting ceremony that was held on Thursday, October 10. Meador would then travel on to two other ribbon cutting ceremonies in Shreveport and Minden, celebrating the renaming of the Shreveport, Minden and Mansfield campuses. The change from Northwest Louisiana Technical College was made official July 1, 2019.

State and Local Election Recap…

DeSoto Parish voters joined their fellow Louisianans by going to the poles on Saturday, October 12. The beautiful fall day encouraged citizens to get out and about with 48% of registered DeSoto voters casting ballots for the candidates that they felt would be the best person for that particular political office.

Locally, DeSoto Clerk of Court Jeremy Evans will retain his office with a victory of 51% of voters supporting him. Evans received 4,693 votes, with Brandy Koenig Pearce receiving 49%, or 4,435. There were 9,128 votes cast in the COC election.

International Paper, Mansfield Mill Retains OSHA VPP Star Site Status

International Paper’s (IP) a Mansfield Containerboard Mill successfully completed its Occupational Safety & Health Association (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Recertification Audit and will continue to retain Star status. In a letter to Kevin Driscoll, mill manager, from Eric Harbin, acting regional administrator, OSHA Dallas, said, “We want to congratulate you on your continued safety and health excellence. We look forward to many more years of working in partnership with you and your employees.”

The Mansfield Mill has been a VPP Star site since August 10, 1994. The auditors were complimentary to the mill’s team members for their participation in safety, as well as mill leaders for their support. “This is a very significant milestone for our Mansfield Mill,” said Harold “Lynn” Youngblood, manager, Safety.

Come join us in Grand Cane from 9:00am until 2:00pm. Talk cars and tractors with the men and women who have come to share their vehicles at this event. Have lunch, visit our shops and just sit a spell taking in the scenery.
