Northwest Louisiana Technical College Mansfield Campus Fall 2013 Graduation

Northwest Louisiana Technical College – Mansfield Campus held their Fall 2013 Commencement on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Desoto Parish Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Gus Hall, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, was the guest speaker. Mr. Hall first congratulated the graduates on their initiative and foresight to further their education. He asked them to look in the mirror every morning and say, “Today is the first day for the rest of my life.” His advice to the graduates was to get used to hearing the word “no” and to be persistent in their endeavors in looking for a job.

Governor Jindal Appoints Sheriff Arbuckle to Council of Peace Officer Standards and Training

On December 3, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal appointed DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney G. Arbuckle to the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The council is responsible for developing and evaluating the curriculum of mandatory basic training courses for municipal officers, deputy sheriffs, state police, wildlife agents, and all other peace officers defined by state law.

Progressive National Bank Celebrates Grand Opening at Mansfield Location

During the Grand Opening festivities at Progressive National Bank, Vice President Millie Bishop was honored with a retirement party after thirty years of service. Mrs. Bishop has been with Progressive National Bank since it opened in in March of 1983.

DeSoto Chamber’s Relay for Life Tree Waiting for Donations

The ladies of the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureau are  pictured hanging specialornaments on one of the Christmas trees in their
offices. Stop by and make a donation in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one that has been affected by cancer, and hang an ornament representing that person. All proceeds will go to the area cancer Relay for Life.

Keatchi Heritage Foundation Announces Christmas Musicale Event

The Keachi Heritage Foundation, Inc. is proudly hosting a Christmas Musicale, entitled “A Classical Christmas Evening”. According to Keachi Mayor Travis Whitfield, the event is slated for Sunday, December 15 at 6:00 PM at the Keachi Presbyterian Church, located on Hwy 5. Featured entertainment for the evening will 
be Dr. Leonard Kacenjar and the Shreveport Festival Strings Quartet. These musicians come from all over the area, but are based out of Shreveport.

Senator Vitter Announces Satellite Office Locations

On December 5, U.S. Senator David Vitter announced staff satellite office hours for residents of Bienville, Red River, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, DeSoto,
Sabine and Natchitoches Parishes. Vitter and his staff use satellite offices in addition to his town hall meetings around the state to make it easier for his constituents to find help in dealing with federal agencies.

Mansfield’s Annual Christmas Festival and Parade

Santa is on his way with children of all ages ready to greet him as he visits DeSoto Parish during Mansfield’s Annual Christmas Parade and Festival this Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14. The event is hosted by the Mansfield Alive! Committee, and will include not only the Christmas parade, but activities as well. Those attending the events will gather around the DeSoto Parish Courthouse Square, where music, food and fun will be  the main focus. There also will be a
karaoke contest and dance contest on both nights of the festival.

Mansfield Main Library Expansion To Begin

On Saturday, November 30 the Mansfield Main Library closed their doors on the old facility one last time as they began the move to their temporary quarters directly across the street from the present library. The move is necessary to vacate the current location so that the remodeling and expansion project can begin. DeSoto Parish Library Director Linn Landis stated that the library would re-open after the move on Monday, December 9 at 9:00 AM when the phone and computer lines will have been connected.

Get in the Christmas Spirit - 7th Annual Pioneer Christmas Parade & Trade Day

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Come get in the holiday spirit on Saturday, Dec. 7th from 10:00am until 2:00pm as the Historic Grand Cane Association (HGCA) and Becky & Don Bates celebrates our 7th Annual Pioneer Christmas Parade & Trade Day. Don Bates of Grand Cane has again done an outstanding job of enlisting entries, from near and far, for an all horse and mule drawn wagon and carriage parade. He reports there should be up to 20 entries that will participate.
