Boyd and Morvan Re-Elected by Acclamation as DPSB President and Vice President

At the January 9th regular board meeting of the DeSoto Parish School Board both President Bobby Boyd and Vice-President Dale Morvan were reelected by acclamation, being the only one nominated for their particular office, and thus elected unanimously. Both men graciously thanked the board for their support and confidence to continue in their positions.

Ribbon Cutting and Open House Planned for Smith’s Jewelry

The DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce has announced that a Ribbon Cutting and Open House is set for Friday, January 17 for Smith’s Jewelry. Their new location is at 106 N. Washington Avenue. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m., with the Open House portion continuing until 2:00 p.m.

As part of a settlement agreement in the recently concluded Arkansas rate review, Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), an American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) company, has agreed to seek regulatory approval to retire the Dolet Hills Power Plant by the end of 2026.

What’s Behind the Stench in the Air in Logansport?

Years ago Logansport was home to Rite Care Poultry Plant that would later become Valmac, and a plywood manufacturing plant, Georgia Pacific. They both had their own smells, but you take the good with the bad when there is industry in town. They now have a stench in the air but no plant of any kind that can be generating the stench that seems stronger at times than others. It has been the topic of several conversations on social media with residents curious as to what the smell is and if it is harmful to breathe.

Deborah David Wilkinson is a grieving widow that was trying to make the best of her life after the death of her husband, Howard, on February 28, 2018. Not only did she lose her life partner, she lost his income. She pondered on how she would continue to make ends meet even when she cut back her household budget considerably. Living on her income as an elementary school teacher in East Texas was difficult to say the least, so after much prayer and careful consideration, by the Fall of 2018, Wilkinson decided to put a portion of the land she inherited from her mother, Lula Bell David, up for sale.

We’ve all heard the expression said, “If walls could talk…”. In this case, if the wooden floors of N. J. Caraway and Company could talk, what tales of the history of Logansport they could share. Opening its doors for business in 1897, Caraways has taken the community from pioneer times through December 28, 2019. Run by the Price-Caraway family from it’s inception until the store was sold to B. C. and Janet Palmer in 1980, it was the utmost in a department store throughout many generations.

DeSoto Animal Services Starts the New Year with a Positive Outlook for 2020

Executive Director Connie Philipp, her staff and volunteers at DeSoto Animal Services (DAS) have had quite an exciting and busy year in 2019 finding loving homes for the unwanted or mistreated animals that come through their facility. And let’s not forget the mosquito abatement program, and other areas that DAS is responsible for. They work tirelessly trying to find forever or “furever” homes for the variety of animals they take care of. This year even had chickens, bunnies and goats with all going to good homes.
