Meet the Rams will be held on August 19th at 5:30 p.m. on the football field prior to Battle on the Border, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. The Joaquin Athletic Booster Club will be taking the gate and it will be $5 for everyone school aged and older. Mansfield Asst. Police Chief Billy Locke reported that at approximately 3:45a.m. on Friday, August 13, 2021, officers responded to a business burglary at the local AT&T store located in the 800 block of Polk Street.

Upon arrival, officers found that entry had been made through the rear of the building. Once inside the burglars made off with several electronic devices and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The North DeSoto Quarterback Club will be hosting the 3rd Annual Meet the Players Auction Dinner on August 14th at the Stonewall Community Center in Stonewall, LA. Doors will open at 6:00PM and dinner will be served at 6:30PM, with the auction to follow. The auction items will consist of sports memorabilia, vacation getaways and much more. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the North DeSoto High School football program.

“We are excited about our upcoming Meet the Players Auction Dinner.”, said Quarterback Club President Christy Bates. “The dinner serves as an opportunity to introduce the 2021 North DeSoto Griffins and to raise money for the football program. The proceeds are used to purchase practice equipment and pregame meals for the football team.

Crystal Davis Burns of the financial services firm Edward Jones recently received the firm’s Soar to Success award, which recognizes financial advisors who achieve high levels of success within the first five years of their careers. These financial advisors have demonstrated their ability to build strong relationships with clients that result in a healthy and sustainable practice.

Burns was one of only 1,413 financial advisors to receive the award.

The Edward Jones branchoffice business model, with more than 15,000 branches throughout North America, allows the firm’s nearly 19,000 financial advisors to discuss personalized strategies with each individual client, with the intention of developing longlasting relationships to help keep them on track toward their goals.

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is opening a new office in DeSoto Parish for Child Welfare and Economic Stability services. The office, located at 104 Crosby Street in Mansfield, will be open to clients beginning today, Monday, August 9.

DCFS occupies the back portion of the building currently housing the DeSoto Parish Registrar of Voters. Some visitors may know this as the building where the DeSoto Parish Health Unit was formerly located. The DCFS office entrance is on the south side of the building.

Twenty DCFS offices were closed or consolidated in 2010 because of cost-saving measures, including the previous DeSoto Parish office. There are still 18 parishes without a DCFS office.

“Rep. Larry Bagley brought this to us as a need for the community, and we’re so glad that he did and happy that it’s finally coming to fruition,” said DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters.

If you’ve ever wondered what it felt like to be pulled over by a policeman and what the driver, the front seat passenger and the rear passengers should actually do to instantly comply, a recent seminar entitled, “Beyond Change” took place at Mansfield High School, to highlight that scenario plus other roles as good citizens and students. The main thing mentioned during this exercise is to place your hands in front of you on the dash or headrest (backseat) where the officer can see them at all times.

Louisiana taxpayers have until Sept. 15, 2021, to claim millions of dollars in state income tax refunds before they become unclaimed property.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) sent letters to 12,818 individual and business taxpayers advising them to claim their refunds before they are transferred by law to the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office. The amount of unclaimed refunds is $10.2 mil lion, issued by paper check from July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020.

On Sunday, August 1, Louisiana finally joined the ranks of U.S. states that have reformed their marijuana laws when Act 247 (House Bill 652) goes into effect.

On that date, possession of 14 grams or less of marijuana will be punishable by a fine of up to $100 or a court summons, without the possibility for jail or prison time, no matter how many times someone is arrested for possessing that amount.

Nearly 20 states have legalized marijuana, and another dozen have decriminalized its possession to some extent. But few of those states are in the South, especially the Deep South. By passing House Bill 652, which was sponsored by State Representative Cedric Glover, the Louisiana legislature acknowledged that the time has come to rethink how (or, indeed, whether) we punish people for using marijuana.

Also, the 2021 return of the Football Digest has returned after skipping 2020 due to Covdid-19. The prices remain the same in the beautiful magazine that highlights all area high school football schedules, colleges, and the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys. The prices for 2021 are $250 for a strip, $350 for a full page, $300 for a halfpage, and $175 for a quarter page. The back cover and premium pages are currently sold out. The magazine is distributed throughout DeSoto, Natchitoches, Sabine, Red River, Grant, and Winn Parishes, also highlighting their high school schedules.

On August 2, reinstated Louisiana’s statewide mask mandate indoors for all people age five and older as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise across Louisiana, threatening the ability of Louisiana’s hospitals to deliver care during this fourth surge of COVID. Louisiana is currently in the worst surge of the COVID-19 pandemic so far in terms of case growth rate, percent positivity and hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday released data that shows that while vaccination reduces one’s chance of becoming infected with COVID-19, those who do become infected with the Delta variant despite being fully vaccinated are likely at risk of transmitting it to others.
