BackAlley Theatre is concluding season 15 with a foot-stomping, hand clapping gospel music extravaganza. SOUTHERN GOSPEL JUBILEE will be held at the Clista Calhoun Center July 15 and 16, 2016 at 7pm. BackAlley Community Theatre is presenting its final show of the 15th season at the Calhoun Center on July 15, and 16, 2016: SOUTHERN GOSPEL JUBLIEE…. A night filled with gospel music from some of your favorite singers including Jimmy Price, George Apperson, Kim Pepmiller, John Neilson, Laura Rogers and the Southern gospel quartet “Set Free”, which includes Jerry Spears, Carl Reed, Ron Loyd and Millard Kimball.

DeSoto COA’s Annual Older American Day Provides Good Times for Seniors”

On May 27, 2016, DeSoto Council on Aging sponsored the Older American’s Day Celebration at the Stonewall Senior Center located at 5236 Hwy 3276 in Stonewall for all the senior citizens of DeSoto Parish, ages 60 and above. Lunch was provided by DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office and Despino’s Tire of Mansfield. The seniors played bingo games, danced, socialized and enjoyed visiting with the vendors that were on site. Many of our local vendors donated door prizes that were given out all throughout the day.

Members of the Class of 2016 at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts were recognized with excellence awards during the 32nd annual senior recognition program held Friday, May 20, in the A.A. Fredericks auditorium located on the campus of Northwestern State University.

NW LTC Mansfield Campus’ Energy Services Students Received T-2 Safety Certification

Northwest LTC Mansfield Campus Students received their training and certification in T-2 Safety, Ashlynn Sanders and Morgan Dill. The main purpose of this course is to provide basic knowledge and skills required to understand, manage, test and document the process safety systems that are found on each production facility.

Red Beans and Rice Benefit Slated for Lyric Gates on June 18

Lyric Gates, son of Kristopher and Paige Gates, was born 10 weeks prematurely. A Red Beans and Rice Fundraiser will be held to help with medical related expenses. Plates are $7.00 and include red beans and rice, green beans, cornbread, dessert, and tea. A bake sale is also in the works. The entire benefit will be held at the Stanley Community Center on Saturday, June 18 from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Also, another fundraiser is currently underway for a DPMS Oracle AR 15.556 cal with a 10 and 30 round mag. This also comes with $50 gift certificate to Desoto Pawn in Kickapoo. Raffle tickets are being sold at $5.00 each.

Mansfield Campus Spring 2016 Graduation

Northwest Louisiana Technical College – Mansfield Campus held their Spring 2016 Commencement on Friday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Clista A. Calhoun Center. Stephen Peterson, Mansfield Nursing Center Administrator, was the guest speaker. This is one of the largest graduating classes that Mansfield Campus has had in a long time – 42 Graduates. Cathy Toups, Adult Ed Instructor, recognized Justin Pepmiller for receiving his Hi-Set (formally GED) Diploma. Justin has been enrolled in the Electrician program at the Mansfield Campus and scheduled graduate with a technical diploma in Electrical Commercial Wiring II in May 2017.

Mansfield Garden Club May Meeting

The Mansfield Garden Club met May 18, 2016, at Helen Calhoun’s Garden on the Lake Road ending the calendar year. Twenty-nine members enjoyed the food and fellowship. This was a record for attendance for a meeting this year. Velda Neilson, Secretary, called the roll and commented on reasons why the other five members were unable to attend.
