The public is invited to Men and Women Day at Magnolia Highland Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. The Pastor is Rev. Rufus Peoples Jr.

BackAlley Theatre is rocking and rolling this weekend Sept.14-16 with its Classic Favorites show at 7 p.m. at the theater in Grand Cane.

Don't miss this last weekend of favorite music performed by a great band with some knockout vocalists.

Greg Taylor, Donny Smith, Kent Gill, Darrel Elliott and Albert Clinton make up the band. Vocalists include Terry Sparks, Paula Callender and Stacie Hinds.

Books and Biscuits Book Club met at the Cook-Hill Bed and  Breakfast in historic Grand Cane Sept. 5. They were treated to a delightful summer salad buffet luncheon, topped off with a great ice cream treat, prepared and served by Historic Grand Cane Association board members. The book for their discussion was “Victoria” by Daisy Goodwin. Goodwin attended the Columbia University’s film school after earning a degree in history at Cambridge University. She is a leading television producer in the U.K. She has published several novels and has also created “Victoria,” the PBS/ITV series.

BackAlley Theatre will be rocking this weekend as the theater kicks off its 17th season with Classic Favorites starring The Classic Band and three outstanding vocalists. The band includes Kent Gill, Donny Smith, Greg Taylor, Albert Clinton and Darrel Elliott. Vocalists for the band are Terry Sparks, Paula Callender and Stacie Hinds.

These three singers starred in Honky Tonk Angels last year’s country music hit. Sparks does a number of the Patsy Cline songs she is famous for, as well as Olivia Newton John and Anne Murray. She has a wonderful mellow country voice and has been singing since she was a child.

Of course the Patsy Cline tribute put her on the map, but she also sings praise and gospel and is very versatile singing harmony for the other band members.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. (A.J.) recently observed their 63rd wedding anniversary on Monday, August 28, 2017. They were married in Galveston, Texas on August 28, 1954 at Wesley Tabernacle Methodist Church.

Mrs. Jean Williams retired from the Desoto Parish School system in 1992 with 34 years teaching, and Mr. Williams retired in 2002 with 47 years as a teacher, principal, and Central Office administrator and supervisor.

They are the proud parents of two daughters. Dianne and Beverly both received their Bachelor Degrees from The University of Louisiana at Monroe (formerly Northeast Louisiana University). Dianna, a registered nurse recently retired from Aetna Health Systems USA, and Beverly is still working as a Radiologic Technologist in Heath Cath and Cardio-Vascular labs.

We have been blessed with 60 years of marriage. It was in God’s plan from September 2, 1957 to September 2, 2107 for us to be a family. He gave us three daughters and two sons to be parents of. Christolyn, Kenneth, Belinda, Robert (deceased) and Frances.

A good crowd came to Central School in Grand Cane, Louisiana on Aug. 5 to celebrate 50 years since the last Grand Cane High School graduation in May of 1967. Honorees were Wayne Bentley, Sammie Brown, Monette Burford, Barbara Davis, Linda Gamble, Deborah Griffith and Marjorie Heath. Deceased members include Joe Cowdin, Paula Hutchings, Jerry West and Francis Hall.

It is also 50 years since Central School Corporation started a school in the fall of 1967. Mrs. Ricky Howe was a student at Central from the beginning. Mrs. Cathy Hunt Latham was also one of the first Central students as well.

BackAlley cranks up its 17th season with the very popular band The Classics presenting a show that brings together all of their favorite music. The band featuring Donny Smith on lead guitar, Darrel Elliott on bass guitar, Kent Gill on the fiddle, Albert Clinton on the drums and Greg Taylor on the keyboard showcases all the music that has made the band popular.

Ensign Marcus Howard (U.S. Navy) and his family are shown at the Pelican Branch Library visiting from Guam and Hawaii. He is a 2003 graduate of Pelican All Saints School. He was a star basketball player and helped to win the First State Championship – Class C Title.
