BackAlley Theatre Extends Steel Magnolias for Additional Matinee Shows February 12 & 19

Because of the popularity of Steel Magnolias, BackAlley Theatre has extended the show to include Sunday February 12 and 19 at 2pm. The show is scheduled to run Feb 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, 18, at 7pm. Call for reservations 461-0202 or email: batboxoffice@gmail.com. The play, which combines humor and pathos, is based on a true incident in the life of author Robert Harling, whose sister chose to have a baby over her doctor’s advice. The play has been performed all over the world and the movie that followed launched Harling’s career as a writer.

Mansfield Garden Club January Meeting

The Mansfield Garden Club met January 18, 2017 at the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce Building for its regular monthly meeting with President Gail Gage presiding. After wishing everyone a Happy New Year, she asked Secretary Velda Neilson to call the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Ott Murphy gave the financial report. The Garden Club lost two of its most faithful members, Helen Calhoun and Madlyn Muench, in December in January. Helen and Madly, we know that you both will keep watch over our gardening efforts from a better place.

Bon Chasse Chapter of DAR’s January Meeting

Members of the local Bon Chasse Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met January 10th at the Grand Cane Baptist Church. New officers were sworn in with Katie Lombardino, Regent, Sabine Chapter LSDAR, officiating. Delegates to the State Conference in Metairie, LA were nominated as well as delegates to Continental Congress in Washington, DC.

Each year the Krewe of Aquarius royalty committee gives intense thought and careful consideration on who should be honored as their King and Queen. As a general rule, the two royals are people that have contributed to the community and strived to help make Logansport a better place for businesses and family life. This year’s selection is a married couple, Michael and Debbie Amox, who will reign as the 2017 King and Queen – Krewe of Aquarius.

Reggie C. Roe Builder, Inc. Receives Award from House of Hope

DeSoto Parish contractor, Reggie C. Roe Builder, Inc., was recently presented an award for his generous donation and continued support to the House of Hope, Inc. HOH, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that is nationwide. Each year, House for Hope, Inc. sells raffle tickets for $100.00 for a chance to win a beautiful home in the Shreveport area as well as numerous prizes that are donated through the generosity of sponsors. The proceeds for the 2016 donations were split between four area organizations that include Community Renewal International, Holy Angels, The Hub-Urban Ministry and Providence House.

DPPJ Administrator Steve Brown Speaks to Mansfield Lions Club

The Mansfield Lions Club welcomed Steve Brown as its special guest speaker for the January 10th meeting. Steve is the DeSoto Parish Administrator for the Police Jury. He provided the Lions Club with a "State of the Union" for DeSoto Parish for the past year as well as for 2017. Steve shared some of the many items that DeSoto Parish residents should be proud of from their Police Jury including: Assets of approximately $280 million with NO debt, and a $32 million budget for 2017 that includes road projects that will include mandated replacement of all stop signs, maintenance of all parish facilities including the DeSoto Parish Court House and all parish assets, and employment for the 100 full time Parish employees along with all the vehicles and equipment. The maintenance of the 800 miles of parish roads is a continuing challenge especially after the rains and flooding of 2016. There are 150 projects relating to the flooding of 2016

BackAlley Theatre has been transformed into Truvy’s Beauty Spot as some veteran actresses and a newbie ready the Robert Harling play “Steel Magnolias” for its February 9-18th run. Snowmen on Display at Logansport Branch Library

The snowmen display arrived just in time to usher in the cold weather we are now experiencing in the area. Louise Palmer has always been drawn to snowmen even though she hasn’t ever lived in a snowy climate. She’s been collecting them ever since her children were small.

Books and Biscuits Book Club Discusses “The Feathered Bone”

The Books and Biscuits Book Club met at Nonnie’s Place in historic Grand Cane January 3, 2017. The book for our discussion was “The Feathered Bone” by Julie Cantrell. This New York Times best-selling author was born in Baton Rouge but now lives in Oxford, Mississippi. She is the mother of two children and her husband is in research at the University of Mississippi. She has written several novels, the most recent being “The Feathered Bone”.
