Former North DeSoto Lady Griffin Sami Walters Earns Distinguished Honor for Louisiana College

Article Image Alt Text

Louisiana College softball continued their excellence in the classroom during the 2018-19 academic year with 20 players earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American honors. To be eligible for the award players must maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average during the entire academic year in which they compete.

“Of all the many accomplishments this team had this year, this is one that I am most proud of,” Head Coach Barry Roberts said. “To have a few kids accomplish this is great, but to have 20 is amazing! ? ?”They work really hard off the field and what you will typically see, is that will carry over to the field. We talk, as a team, often, about taking care of details. This is a result of taking care of details.”

The Dunn Era Has Officially Begun in Stonewall

Article Image Alt Text

A lot has changed for the North DeSoto football team since the end of last season. A major change being there’s a new coach in Stonewall. Coach Dennis Dunn has taken over for the Griffins.

It’s an exciting new chapter for Griffin football. Coach Dunn has his hands full with a young team this year after losing 21 seniors last season. Having to rebuild from a loss like that is no easy task for any coach, but if there’s anyone up to the challenge then it’s Coach Dunn.

North DeSoto got their first bit of action in the spring game when they took on Huntington. In the spring game they rotate out between the 1st team, 2nd team, and 3rd team. So mostly everyone gets to play, as it is a learning experience.

What It Takes To Play Sports In College, Part 2

My story as a high school athlete is typical and easily relatable to most athletes. I came from a small school, no one really cared if I went to play in college, I didn’t have much support, and I surely didn’t have anyone to show me how to navigate the collegiate system. My first year I was Red Shirted (meaning I did not play). An athlete can be red shirted for multiple reasons such as poor grades, injuries, lack of maturity, weaker than expected skills, too many athletes to suit up, etc. With that said I excelled to be a record breaker, a record setter, and a record holder. So can you by choosing the right program. This is one of the most difficult things to do because your selection of programs depends on who has interest in you. Your race and religion will not matter to most coaches. The school you like may not like you as an athlete. The school that chose me didn’t select me because I was a prolific scorer or rebounder.

LA House Approves Bill to Purchase Team Gleason Foundation License Plates

Article Image Alt Text

A House committee approved a bill to let Louisiana residents buy Team Gleason Foundation license plates to help a former New Orleans Saints player in his fight against ALS.

Steve Gleason, one of the most beloved players in Saints history, was a safety from 2000 to 2008 and was diagnosed with ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2011. He and his wife established the Team Gleason Foundation shortly after that to inspire and show other ALS patients they “can not only live but thrive.”

Most Saints fans recall his blocked punt against the Atlanta Falcons, which helped lead the Saints to victory, on the night the Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina.

Lady Tigers Fall Short in Semifinals

Article Image Alt Text

The Logansport Lady Tigers’ historical season came to an end in Sulphur at the hands of district foe LaSalle by a score of 12-5. The Lady Tigers, making their first ever trip to the semifinals, struck first in the opening inning scoring 3 runs. Leadoff hitter and LSUA signee Katherine Atkins got the game going with a leadoff single to left field. After a walk by Destini Briggs, Logansport had runners on the corners when Mara Lee Briggs laid down a beautiful bunt for a single to the second baseman that scored Atkins and moved her sister to third. Two wild pitches by LaSalle pitcher Taylor Snow advanced the Briggs sisters allowing them to score. In the bottom of the inning LaSalle answered back in a big way and scores 7 runs on 5 hits and 2 Lady Tiger errors.
