DPPJ Issues Parish- Wide Burn Ban

According to DeSoto Parish Police Jury President Reggie Roe, a parish-wide burn ban has been issued as of Friday, August 7. The ban will continue until notices are posted or announced by area media. The order wasissued due to the lack of rainfall, making DeSoto Parish the first in Northwest Louisiana to issue such an ordinance this summer. Many have joined since last week’s announcement making the majority of northwest Louisiana and east Texas to have followed suit. According to the order, anyone violating the burn ban will be subject to the maximum fines and penalties allowed by law. The ban will be in effect until the area receives a substantial amount of rainfall. Smokers are also asked to not throw lit smoking materials out the window of their vehicles. Not only is it illegal to litter with subsequent fines, it is currently a dangerous and potential fire hazard.

DPSD Makes Multiple Drug Arrests

Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle has reported the arrest of multiple subjects involved in the possession of illegal narcotics and the seizure of weapons. Both arrests were the result of traffic stops conducted by the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division. The first traffic stop was conducted on July 31, at about 7:39 p.m. in the area of US Highway 171 in Grand Cane. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jeremy McCray, 28-year-old black male of Shreveport and the passenger was identified as Malcolm Jamar McCray, 27-year-old black male of Forney, TX.

DeSoto Parish Clerk of Court Jeremy Evans has announced promotions for two of his employees, Jayme Maxie and Amanda West. The promotions were effective as of May 18, 2015.
Ms. Maxie is a Mansfield native and has eight years of experience in the Clerk of Court’s office, where she has worked in all departments. ...
Ms. West has been with the Clerk’s office for two and one-half years, and also has worked in all of the office’s areas. Her promotion was from Deputy Clerk to Office Supervisor. ...

ATC Reaches Agreement on Stonewall Alcohol Permit Issue

The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) Commissioner Troy Hebert had ongoing negotiations with leaders from ATC and Stonewall Beverage Company for most of the day yesterday concerning a controversial alcohol permit for Stonewall Beverage Company. The business recently submitted an application to ATC seeking a state alcoholic beverage permit to sell packaged beer, wine and liquor for off premise consumption.

Mansfield Alive Committee Sets Date for 2nd Annual Employee of Year Banquet

The Mansfield Alive Committee has announced the date for the Second Annual Employee of the Year Banquet. The event was established last year for employees of the Mansfield area to be nominated for outstanding service with a first, second and third place winner to be honored. The banquet is slated for Saturday, August 29 at 7:00 PM, and will be held at the  Clista A. Calhoun Center. Tickets for the event are priced at $25.00 per person, with tickets for a table of eight set at $150.00.

DPPJ and DPSB Unite with Land Swap Initiative to Best Serve Public’s Best Interest

For the first time in recent history, officials of the DeSoto Parish Police Jury and the DeSoto Parish School Board came together this week to close on an exchange of land to accommodate each of the governing bodies future building plans with a common goal in mind… to better serve the public. With no monies changing hands, the police jury is exchanging almost six acres of land at the Industrial Park, which adjoins the C. E. “Rusty” Williams Airport, for the same amount of land at Alumni Park, which is located at the Multicultural Center in Mansfield. The center is now housed in what was once the old DeSoto High School.

Former NFL Legend Albert Lewis to Assist Wolverine Coaching Staff

Mansfield High School Athletic Director Christopher Hill recently announced that NFL legend Albert Lewis was returning to his hometown of Mansfield to help with the coaching staff. Hill was ecstatic about the announcement and rightly so. “I feel that having an NFL legend come home to be a part of our football program is an extraordinary opportunity for our student athletes as well as our coaches,” said Hill.
