A New Game Plan

By Stephen Waguespack

The decision is made. We selected our leader, and now it is time to focus on solving our problems. No, I’m not talking about Coach Miles and the work ahead for the Tigers’ top dog and his team to regain supremacy in the SEC. I’m talking about Governo relect Edwards and his task of working with the new Legislature and others to tackle Louisiana’s challenges and reinforce its many strengths.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

Christmas is made with lots and lots of candies, cakes and toys and not for naughty boys. And we thought we had been good especially for a couple weeks anyway. And we had not been told about the real Santa who put the gifts under the tree and then jumped in the bed with mama. It was a disturbance of great magnitude to learn this even though we had heard our older brothers laugh about it.

How Can the Fed’s Actions Affect You?

By L.C. Hall

When will the Federal Reserve raise interest rates? This question has been on the minds of economists and financial market prognosticators for quite some time now. But what does it mean to you, as an individual investor? First of all, it’s important to understand just what is meant by “raising rates.”

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

The unveiling of a permanent marker with a tribute to servicemen of all wars was an attractive program in front of the courthouse sponsored by the DeSoto Parish Police Jury. It also was for Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, honoring vets for service to our country. And most of the World War vets are fast disappearing with only four living in this end of the parish and we boast that we won, the others were known as police action, but Korea and Vietnam took too many lives, foolishly, and America should be publicly shamed for the treatment given many of these veterans when they arrived back in the states. We older boys saluté them for their sacrifices in the jungles, in the air, on the ground and at sea. Don’t feel too badly, we weren’t recognized for 70 years, but we felt it was our duty to fight and win, and we did. One old soldier said there were three who would not go again—he and the two who came after him.

A Guide for This Weekend’s Election

By Stephen Waguespack

One election cannot change an entire way of life for our state, but it can set us back to a time when free enterprise was just a dream. Louisiana residents will head to the polls to vote on statewide and local races this Saturday, yet surveys show that many voters are still trying to determine which candidates best reflect their beliefs.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

It is too warm to kill hogs, according to the late Charles Ford Blanchard Sr. The weather must be chilly, at least 30 degrees, and quite fair. Also, plenty of help around since he killed at least a half dozen fat “shoats” which has been in a small pen and fed daily for just that purpose.

The Louisiana people are rightly frustrated and they are looking for hope. They want a new approach to old problems, inspiring leadership to rally around, honesty to admire and integrity to emulate.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

Poverty Point has become a real find in history dating back some 3,000 to 3,500 years and has gained in national history. It is located some four walking miles from our home in Epps in West Carroll Parish and draws visitors from throughout the nation. To we country boys it was the only swimming hole (Bayou Macon) to which we could walk on a Sunday afternoon and our mothers were rather objectionable about fun on the Sabbath. We forgot about our wet heads and lied about any swimming.

Big Election for the Big Easy

By Stephen Waguespack

There is potentially no more important issue in Louisiana than improving our educational system, yet this is not getting the attention it deserves in the governor’s race. Decades of poor educational outcomes have contributed to our chronic challenges with generational poverty, crime, poor health habits, an under-developed workforce, and slow economic growth.

Back to Basics

by Stephen Waguespack

It is time we look at the facts and get back to the basics. The budget of Louisiana’s state government is the top issue this election season. While issues such as improving educational outcomes for our children and diversifying the economy are critical for the success of Louisiana, the state budget is the topic that is dominating the debate.
