DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

It is no fun being poor even if everyone else is in the same boat. Pride had to be a contributing factor if there was any way of holding up your head and we can remember both instances, interlibrary.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

There were no outstanding beliefs who would and who would not win last Saturday in what we call the first primary election. However, five candidates for parish police jury are still knocking on doors and asking for your vote. Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle easily bested Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs in a count of 6,698 to 1,871 while a lot of information was passed around. With a salary of $1,600 a month this drew more than the normal count of wannabes for the 11-member body.

Apathy is a Powerful Emotion

By Stephen Waguespack
A big election was held this weekend, though the numbers don’t show it. Only 38.5 percent of registered voters showed up and voted in Saturday’s election for governor. That’s right, 38.5 percent. This, after countless candidate forums, debates, articles, commercials, mailers, Facebook posts and yard signs along every street that constantly reminded us for the last several months that this election was taking place.

If you haven’t seen the production of Back Alley Community Theatre’s of The Marvelous Wonderette Caps and Gowns you have missed a real professional night of music by “local” four talented women, three school teachers and a therapist.

Plenty of Good News in Manufacturing

By Stephen Waguespack

Ready for some good news? In a world dominated by gloomy economic projections, combative political storylines, and unsettling international developments, it is helpful to periodically focus on some good news. The hard-fought resurgence of American manufacturing is one of those stories.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

By John Blanchard

Country boys have more fun when not working, than anyone. There’s a real sport called corncob war when a wet cob is on the end of a limber switch and thrown at the other team. They hurt when you are the victim. Meanwhile there is a “bag swing” and the platform is raised about fifteen high from which to jump. A visitor swung over the cow pond and lost his new hat and he left the bag and jumped for his new headpiece and into the pond.

A Visit to DC

By Stephen Waguespack

Ready for some good news? In a world dominated by gloomy economic projections, combative political storylines, and unsettling international developments, it is helpful to periodically focus on some good news. The hard-fought resurgence of American manufacturing is one of those stories. The country is celebrating National Manufacturing Day on October 2. Throughout this week our team at the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) will be personally visiting many of our manufacturing members to highlight their work, the high-paying jobs they offer, and their contributions to the community and our state.
