Mansfield Woman Killed in Crash

DeSoto Parish–Shortly before 11 a.m. on Sept. 22, Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two vehicle crash on La. 175 just south of La. 3015 in DeSoto Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Lincoln LS sedan driven by 19-year-old Kayla Allen of Mansfield was traveling south on La. 175. A 2015 Smart car driven by 18- year-old Kayla Ford of Mansfield was traveling north on La. 175.

Keachi Honors Edward A. Thomas with Proclamation

The Town of Keachi will recognize Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 as Edward A. Thomas Day. Thomas was a legendary lawman for the Houston Police Department. He was born in Keachi on Sept. 23, 1919.

During his remarkable life, he was drafted into the United States Army and served many years. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and then in 1948, he graduated from Houston Police Department Cadet Class No. 1. He was one of the first African American police officers to join the Houston Police Department.

He received awards, commendations and letters of appreciation throughout his law enforcement career.

Full-time Pediatrician Comes to DeSoto Parish

DeSoto Regional Health System has not had a full-time pediatrician for several years. To fill this need, DeSoto Regional Health System has hired Brandon J. Salgado, MD as a full-time pediatrician to see local children.

Children are currently seen by local family practitioners. A fulltime pediatrician will give DeSoto Parish’s residents local pediatric access.

“Hopefully, it will allow folks to be able to bring their children from birth all the way through adolescence here to Mansfield rather than having to go to Shreveport,” DeSoto Regional Health System CEO Todd Eppler said.

DeSoto Embarks on District-Wide Smart Board Initiative

DeSoto Parish Schools recently completed a 1.2 million dollar investment in its classrooms. Each instructional space now boasts a state-of- the-art interactive flat panel display.

“With this investment, we hope to augment the tremendous talent of our teachers and provide a technology rich environment for our students,” Superintendent Clay Corley said.

Installation of these boards began in mid-July with most being completed before school started. A representative from each school recently attended an interactive training session with a SMART certified trainer. Each teacher then returned to their home school and redelivered the information learned at this session.

DeSoto Parish Police Jury Starts Initiative to Keep DeSoto Beautiful

Most highways in DeSoto Parish have some form of litter on the side of the road. While some areas only have a few pieces of trash, in other areas litter has built up over time. DeSoto Parish Police Jury is trying to do something about it.

Last year, Police Juror Ernel Jones observed that the parish was growing filthy. It got to the point where he saw trash and paper on the side of the road along almost every highway. Jones brought the litter problem to the jury.

Clear Lake Continues to Disappear

Police Jury Revotes to Clarify DA Office Space

After several months of deliberation, the DeSoto Parish Police Jury voted Aug. 13 to give the District Attorney and defense council their own offices in the courthouse; however, the motion was re-voted on at a special meeting on Aug. 27 because the motion’s intent was unclear.

“The motion voted upon was not the motion that you made,” Parish Attorney Dannye Malone said.

Remembered For the Love of the Game

For some people, football is more than a game. For Mansfield Native Willie Houston, football was everything, including a reason to go back to school.

Houston was encouraged by his friends to go back to school and join the football team after they saw his talent.
