On April 22, DeSoto Fire District l’s fireman got a little practice on fire fighting techniques with a family’s request for an unoccupied home demolition. DFD 1 Firefighters provide this service as a means to help them teach new firemen proper standards and learn new procedures.

Each day more than 700,000 social workers nationwide make life better for others. They empower people, giving them the skills and encouragement, they need to overcome life’s challenges. They also link clients to resources they may need to live more fulfilled lives.

Social workers are everywhere. They work in schools, helping children get the services they need to get the best possible education. They are in mental health centers and private practices, helping people overcome mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety and substance use disorders.

Each day more than 700,000 social workers nationwide make life better for others. They empower people, giving them the skills and encouragement, they need to overcome life’s challenges. They also link clients to resources they may need to live more fulfilled lives.

Social workers are everywhere. They work in schools, helping children get the services they need to get the best possible education. They are in mental health centers and private practices, helping people overcome mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety and substance use disorders.

They protect children from neglect and abuse and help form new families through adoption. Social workers are in hospitals, helping patients get the best possible care not only while in treatment but when they return to their families and communities. And they help those cope with the loss of loved ones.

A large crowd gathers at the Grand Cane Post Office each weekday morning at 9:00 to await arrival of the train that brings letters from family and friends or packages from Sears & Roebuck. While waiting for the mail to be “put up” friends and neighbors spend time visiting and catching up on the latest community news.

George N. Parker had purchased the building in 1910 to operate a mercantile business. It later served as a Post Office. Eventually the train stopped running through Grand Cane and the Post Office moved to another location in a newer building. Crowds ceased to gather. This historic building was abandoned and fell into a serious state of disrepair. However, after many years two visions came together resulting in birth of the 4 C Coffee House.

Popular parish and Logansport town leader Norman Arbuckle passed away on February 19, 2021 at the Highland Hospital in Shreveport. Services honoring his life were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26 at Roseneath Funeral Home in Logansport. Visitation was held prior to the service. Rev. Nancy Wofford and Norman’s nephew, retired DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle presided over the service.

He was in born June 1935 in Fitchtown, OK and made his way to Logansport, where he attended, participated in sports and graduated from Logansport High School in 1954. After high school, he joined the United States Army.

While serving overseas in the Army as a First Sergeant Military Policeman he married his wife of 62 years, Jeannine, and brought her back to his hometown of Logansport. Upon returning to the United States (and still serving our country), he and Jeannine moved around with four kids in tow.

The President’s Honor List for the fall 2020 semester at McNeese State University has been announced. To be on the President’s Honor List, an undergraduate student must earn at least a 3.5 GPA or better while carrying at least 15 semester hours. A senior eligible for graduation but carrying less than 15 hours is also eligible provided that student was on the President’s Honor List the previous semester.

Baseball may be one of America’s favorite sports and the illustrator Normal Rockwell may very well be one of America’s favorite illustrators (artist). Mr. Rockwell was born February 3, 1894 in New York City, New York. He died on November 3, 1978. At age 14 he enrolled in art classes at the New York School of Art. In 1910 he left high school to study art at the National Academy of Design and then spent over 5 decades with the Saturday Evening Post.

Groundhog Day, celebrated across the United States and Canada, on February 2, is purely a North American tradition. It is based on a belief that on this day the groundhog, or woodchuck, comes out of his hole after winter hibernation to look for its shadow. If the shadow is seen, it’s a sunny day, and if not the groundhog foretells six more weeks of winter weather. If no shadow is seen due to cloudy weather, by our rodent friend spring is coming. The groundhog then behaves accordingly, going back into the hole if the weather turns bad, but stays above ground if spring is near.

Whether the weather is sunny and warm or dreary and cold, your favorite branch of the DeSoto Parish Library is ready to help you select books or attend activities regarding things that you love to do or want to learn about.

During February we celebrate Black History Month, Ground Hog’s Day, St. Valentine’s Day, Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday, George Washington’s Birthday, and the Chinese New Year. Get one of the library staff to help you select books, audiobooks, or DVDs about any of these subjects to expand your knowledge or help you to develop a new or better respect about the occasion.

Another February occurrence you might want to learn more about is Leap Year. The second month of the year is also the shortest on the Julian calendar, which was introduced to us by Julius Caesar on January 1, 45 BC. February is also the month where we add a day every 4 years and call it Leap Year. The next Leap Year will be in 2024.
